Mentos – Chlorophylle (@CyberCandyLtd) [By @Cinabar]

When I first heard about these Mentos being newly stocked in CyberCandy, I really wasn’t sure what to make of them. I do enjoy Mentos sweets a lot, and usually have a pack of the fruit ones lurking on my desk for an emergency sugar fix at work. This new flavour confused me a bit though, I thought Chlorophyll was what made leaves green and if anything was just a food colouring? A little bit of research (i.e. a quick Google) show that it is also thought to get rid of odours, so might be useful as a breath sweet. There doesn’t seem to be much science to back it up though sadly.
When I opened up the tube of sweets I was rather surprised to find that these sweets are merely off white in colour. There is the vaguest hint of green about them, but for all intents and purposes they are nearer white than anything else. Did I mention that Chlorophyll is used as a green food colouring, so I was expecting some bright looking sweets!
I popped one in my mouth and the outer shell had a very vague leafy taste, it actually reminded me of green tea. Just before I could get used to it, or try and identify the flavour a bit more a sweep of spearmint spread across the palette and took over. These turned into a much more expected Mentos taste. The texture was the same as the regular sweets, with the hard shell giving way, and the whole sweet becoming chewy. I really think you could hand these out to other people to try, and unless they were really looking for it, they would never notice anything but the fact they were eating regular mint Mentos. Perhaps their breath would be a little fresher though? ;-)
