Wensleydale Creamery BBQ Cheddar Cheese (Waitrose) By @Cinabar

This fine block of cheese was found in Waitrose, who have in the past had some very creative varieties of cheese on their shelves. This particular block of cheese claimed it was infused with the flavours of BBQ, and I wasn’t sure whether that meant a smokiness or more like a barbecue sauce type of flavour. Once the pack was opened it soon became clear that neither of my first thoughts were right.
The cheese has a cheddar base, and mixed into it are peppers, smoked paprika, garlic and the most dominant flavour, chilli. This cheese does have a good soft creamy flavour from the cheese, the smoked paprika adds a nice depth, but mostly the cheese has heat from the chilli, and it causes a strong tingle and my whole mouth started to buzz. I like (a bit) of a chilli kick but was still surprised that these cheese was packing as much punch as it did, it did make it interesting, but I think it may have been too much for a flavour described as barbecue. It's lingering flavour also overpowered my other lunch items as my tongues needed a little time to recover after each bite. Having said that the hint of peppers still managed to emerge and the cheese did work well. So enjoyable, but its generous helping of chilli might be a bit more than expected. I think renaming it Spicy BBQ would have been a fairer description.
