I’d like to start with a big thank you to DavidH for finding this fab bar. It is a Polish version of a Lion bar, but it is their new white chocolate version. White chocolate seems to be a popular summer trend, with many companies releasing white chocolate and fruit bars in the summer. I haven’t seen white chocolate Lion bars in the UK sadly. To be honest Lion isn’t one of those bars that have many Limited Edition varieties here in the UK at all. I don’t think I’ve seen one in all the years we’ve been doing the blog? I broke the bar in half to take a peek inside, and saw the usual layers of wafer and caramel as you would expect in a Lion bar, but also a white substance which I assumed to be white chocolate.
As I bit in the layers of caramel and wafer gave the bar a lovely substantial feel and a fab sweet hit. The white chocolate worked really well, and made the bar creamy too, but it managed to save off being sickly because of a hit of coconut to break up the flavour.
I am convinced the bar is flavoured with coconut, it added its lovely tropical edge and I thought there was no mistaking the taste, but I couldn’t find any evidence of this on the packaging. Actually the packaging is in Polish, and I don’t speak Polish, but I do have the internet. Google told me the side of the pack said “waffle stuffed with caramel and rice flakes in a white glaze”, I’m assuming google meant wafer and white chocolate, but heck no obvious mentioning of coconut. Using my initiative I then googled the Polish for coconut, and discovered the work is “kokos” but sadly couldn’t find that on the wrapper anywhere either. I can’t back it up with evidence, but this bar tasted of white chocolate and coconut, and I trust my taste buds.
It was a gorgeous bar, summery but still substantial which is harder than you’d imagine to pull off. If you see one in an import / pound shop I’d recommend giving it a go as it is a lovely bar. I think we (the UK) really ought to lobby Nestle to release some New / Limited Edition Lion bars here, I can’t help but think we are missing out on some proper treats.

Ooh wow, a white lion bar, this looks a satisfying treat yum! wish they had stuff like that here ,i think i may have a polish convenience shop near me..may have to go hunting in it!

ReplyDeleteI've had some; a local cheap shop stocked some for a while last year or even the year before. They were gorgeous! I can't remember them being an import though but I may be wrong.

ReplyDeleteI discovered these last week in Kefalonia! Very nice!! They do not have coconut in them! I checked the packaging, coconut in Polish is kokosowy and is nowhere to be seen! I'd love to find these in the UK!!

ReplyDeleteSadly neither amazon nor Cybercandy stock the white lions - just going to have to keep an eye out at the pound shops.
ReplyDeleteA shop near me sold these for a little bit said they got them from some cash and carry but they stopped doing them. The White chocolate ones are miles better they need to bring them out properly here.
ReplyDeleteRogue local shop round the corner from my uni accom in leicester sells them, 4 for £1.10. so much better than real lions. Also one to look out for are strawberry aeros, try it before you judge although ive never seen them before in the UK (this rougue shop sells them too - on the standard 4 for £1.10 deal)

ReplyDeleteFound them online here - www.zapsweets.co.uk/lion-bar-white.html - they taste delicious, just as I first rembered them! They are sometimes out stock as they are imported but it's normally not for long!
i had my first one of these when i went on holiday to bulgaria and they are my favourite chocolate bars, i bought a whole box home with me. cant wait to go back and get more!!
ReplyDeleteIm currently gorging myself on the white Lion Bars. My G/F found some in a small corner shop in Birmingham. After having one, i told her to get back to the shop quickly and get the rest of the box...which she did.
ReplyDeleteIm not that much of a brown chocolate eater but theese things in white chocolate are delicious. Taste a little vanilla like to me. Highly reccomended if you can find any.

ReplyDeleteJust to let you know, these are now readily available in the UK as the company i work for are importing pallets by the container load at the moment and distibuting to shops around the country. Look for them in pound shops and on markets.

ReplyDeleteHad one of these from a grocers in Coventry. I didn't get a coconut taste myself, it mainly reminded me of Rice Krispie Squares for some reason. Think I prefer the normal Lion. :)
ReplyDeleteLove these! We need to get Nestlé to get making them here. Also available in Peanut variety which are also the bomb and I remember getting peanut Lion bars back in the 90s before they vanished. But back to the original topic, only one shop sells these near me and yes, they're from a shady cash and carry that sells imports.
ReplyDeleteI bought some of these and the peanut variety recently. The peanut ones are AMAZING. I love the chewiness of the caramel, and the peanuts add a nice crunchy/salty element. I didn't enjoy the white version as much - it's nice, but far too sweet. They definitely taste of coconut too.

ReplyDeleteJust had one! I couldn't figure out what was in them, but was convinced I tasted coconut ... its my fav flavour ... so googled to bring ingredients and stumbled across your site. Even if coconut is not listed, there is definitely a coconut taste, its very strong on your first bite.
ReplyDeleteI bought one of these at work. Set about sharing it with my daughter and checked out the ingredients list. Then noticed it said its not suitable for vegetarians!! Went throught the ingredients again but couldn't find anything animal related. Any ideas??
