Pringles Minis - BBQ Flavour (Iceland) By @Cinabar

You know the whole “once you pop, you can’t stop” thing? Well, that has always been true for me when it comes to Pringles. They are incredibly moreish, and I always end up eating far too many.

In fact, I once ate far too many from one tube, worked out afterwards how many calories I’d consumed, and realised (without too much of a spoiler) that after the shock had worn off, those big tubes are clearly meant for sharing! So Pringles tubs are definitely a treat for us. These, however, are Pringles in individual packs, and they are much more about portion control and the ability to pop a bag into a lunch box.

These Pringles Minis BBQ Flavour are smaller versions of the usual curved shape. The seasoning is plentiful too, which is great. It isn’t completely evenly distributed, but every crisp has a good sprinkle of flavouring.

I gave one (who am I kidding, I finished the whole bag) a try. I loved the BBQ flavour, which was sweet and smoky. The crunch and potato base were fab, and all that Pringles magic was packed in there.

I could have eaten more, but I didn’t, because that would have meant physically opening another bag! For me, these worked perfectly. I can’t wait to pick up the Ready Salted flavour too and have them at lunchtime with a sandwich.

Ltd Ed PRINGLES Passport Japanese Stir Fry [@NLi10]

 My partner likes Pringles, and I like to try new things - so here are the latest Pringles. Pringles Passport are a range of flavours from around the world, presumably it's a non-EU passport.

This is Japanese Stir Fry

MMM - uncooked rice with some onion and pepper - classic Japanese food.

The wok looks better, but where is your sauce?  Where is your meat!

Oh - it's just Pringle seasoning - same as usual.

They look and taste almost identical to the pizza pringles (which are nice) but the umami is stronger.  The bases are identical to normal - which with rice on the packet feels like a missed opportunity to make these a little jazzier.

So - if you fancy some Pringles and these are on special offer then go ahead!  Bring a drink though - these will make you thirsty.

Pringles Sizzl’n Extra Hot Cheese Chilli (Tesco) By @Cinabar

The most important thing you should know before eating these is that sipping milk dilutes a chilli burn. I have eaten an awful lot of different chilli flavoured hot crisps over the years and the general theme is that they aren’t that hot. I don’t say that as someone who is claiming to be able to tackle chilli heat with ease, in fact I’m very much a medium spice kind of person, but crisps are rarely anything more than mild to medium. I poured some of these on to the plate, pinched one to test and realised my mouth was on fire. Oh my, this should make for an interesting lunch.

What was impressive about these Pringles Sizzl’n Extra Hot Cheese Chilli crisps is that despite them being too hot for me they still magically moreish. I have known how Pringles do that, but with these I seemed to want to continually burn my mouth and I was actually wanting another each time. I was also pleased that these Pringles Sizzl’n Extra Hot Cheese Chilli crisps weren’t just about the heat, the nacho cheese flavour shone through the fire and tasted fantastic. These crisps are too hot for me, I could barely eat them but for reasons unknown I want more, they were amazing. I’ll even forgive the abbreviation of sizzling too “Sizzl’n”.

Pringles Pulled Pork Burger (Sainsbury's) By @Cinabar

We were having a sort out of the crisps mountain, I mean crisps cupboard, in the kitchen and found this tube of Pringles Pulled Pork Burger variety. They were still in date! These Pringles were released with a football competition on the packet but for me it is all a out the new flavour and I do like pulled pork. Spectre accidentally looked at the calories on the pack and reminded us both why you should never check Pringles, just know the focus is on tasty rather above anything else. We shared some with sandwiches and fruit, for balance! We didn’t even finish the tub (well we did but not until later in the evening which obviously doesn’t count).

The flavour was really nice, there was quite a lot of meatiness from the pork and the smokey sweet barbecue flavour too that worked well. I could pick up on paprika and nice spices and thought it went well with the base pork taste. As ever with Pringles they are far too moreish and the temptation is to eat the whole tube, despite the fact that it reseals. I suspect these were a limited edition that is coming to an end which is a shame as they are seriously good crisp flavour. I do like meaty flavours. On the bright side we found plenty of other goodies to explore in the slightly more organised crisp cupboard, including some chilli cheese Pringles for another day.

Pringles Rice Fusion - Japanese Katsu Curry flavour (@NLi10)

Pringles are honestly the worst thing in the world to review because it's always the same pictures - with slightly different dust.  These are the rice fusion Pringles which if you've not tried are a slight texture change to the original Pringles.

And they are often on sale because the unusual flavours are scary.  The red thai ones were ace - lets see if these are too.

Oh - the excitement!

This dust does have more visible 'bits' in it which adds some colour.

They smell a bit like the Japanese gravy/curry that is katsu - and they taste a lot like it too.  Maybe not quite rich enough to be convincing, but it's definitley as close as I think you could get with a little disk instead of crispy pork or chicken.

These are enjoyable, but they mostly make me miss my trips to Yakinori for their Katsu.  

They do have the usual Pringles almost addictive factor so if you eat a whole tube to yourself expect to get cravings for more!

 

Pringles Rice Fusion - Malaysian Red Curry (@NLi10)

Pringles are great. They are always on special offer to get you back in the habit , and they always come up with new things to get you back in the habit too. The fact they have special Pringles sales reps that visit stores to check they are in the right position is a little creepy.

They also have a medium size for cinemas so you don’t notice just how much you are paying for a mostly empty tube of oddly shaped disks.

They do make some exciting tube snacks though, and I think this might be the first ever flavour to rival my preference for the blue Salt & Vinegar ones.

They are called. Malaysian Red Curry, which to me tastes Thai, and are rice based - I assume for gluten reasons (although I didn’t check the allergy status).

And they taste like red curry paste, which regular readers will know I’m a big fan of. 

Consequently I could eat an awful lot of these without stopping, so I had to eat little piles of restraint. Luckily my big scoopy hands can’t get to the bottom of the tubes so resisting was easier.

Here are a lot of words that no human will ever read in their entirety.

New Pringles Rice Fusion - Malaysian Red Curry Flavour (Asda) By @Cinabar

These crisps are a both a new flavour and a new style of product from Pringles. They are called Pringles Rice Fusion - Malaysian Red Curry flavour crisps, and they are actually made with rice flour. The flavour is that of a curry that would also go well with rice, but these are still in the usual Pringles crisps format. In fact, dare I say it, if you didn’t know they were made with rice flour you wouldn’t have noticed a difference in texture.
I have to admit to not knowing what a Malaysian Red Curry should taste like. I have had Thai red curries, but not Malaysian, so it is probably best if I just describe the flavour, and try not to worry too much about what it is supposed to taste like.
These crisps are mildly spiced, but they are very fragrant. I could taste curry powder and cardamon and I liked these spices. The other main flavour is a lovely creaminess that runs throughout the taste which was very much like coconut. This worked beautifully with the gentle spices, and as ever with Pringles, theses crisps were very moreish and tasty. To my taste buds they could have been made with the usual potato base and I don’t think I would have noticed, the rice works very well. One thing is though these Pringles Rice Fusion - Malaysian Red Curry Flavour were so tasty, it makes me want to try a proper Malaysian Red Curry, so I better have a hunt for a recipe.

Pringles Festival Edition Salt, Pepper & Herb Wedges Flavour (Asda) By @cinabar

New flavours of Pringles can be quite adventurous, and often quite spicy. These new Pringles have been brought out for Festival season and come in a bright coloured tube that is very eye catching. The flavour didn’t seem that exciting to me, it is titled Pringles Festival Edition Salt, Pepper and Herb Wedges Flavour, but essentially sounded like salt, pepper and herbs seasoning. What I’m trying to say ifs for such a bright and fun time of year and with the pretty packaging the actual flavour sounded like a bit of an anti-climax.
I don’t have any plans to attend festivals this year so had these with lunch, not quite the same as munching these in a tent on a muddy field with loud music, but I’m sure the setting doesn’t affect the flavour.
I gave one a try and realised immediately I had underestimated these new Pringles Festival Edition crisps, they were absolutely full of flavour. The seasoning was quite strong and I think I could pick up on Italian herbs and rosemary, there was nice twist of onion too and the salt and pepper enhanced all these flavours. The taste was quite strong, but in a good way. I had my first one and the Pringles moreish magic kicked in and I couldn’t stop munching. I may have underestimated these crisps, as these are a special edition I will miss them when they go, never mind festivals, these are the perfect tub to pack into any picnic basket, or just to share in front of the TV.

Screamin’ Dill Pickle Pringles (Asda) By @cinabar

In the import section in Asda I found these rather interesting sounding Dill Pickle flavour Pringles. They looked like they should have been a taste sensation, and even promised an “extra-ordinary” flavour across the top of the tub. I really like gherkins in dill and vinegar as a side with a cheese and crackers, I find the dill flavour adds a lovely herby flavour and enhances the pickle.
I opened up the tub and gave them the taste test. I think these meet the criteria of being the first pack of Pringles that once I popped I really could stop. The flavour didn’t “scream” at all, it almost had a hint of cardboard like taste. There was the mild flavour of vinegar and a herby dill hint, but the taste was very muted and they were quite dull. The herb taste didn’t work for me at all, and I usually like dill. I couldn’t get past the idea that the flavour was like a poor cousin to a zingy salt and vinegar. The background flavour was weird, and to me it didn’t taste like the pickles I love so much. Spectre ended up eating them up with a dip, but I quit even after trying that. Normally Pringles are so addictive, so I’m not sure what happened with these.
This was the only variety of imported Pringles in my local branch of Asda, it is just that if I was only going to stock one import flavour of Pringles in a supermarket, these would not be them.

Pringles: Pigs in Blankets Crisps (Sainsburys) By @Cinabar

I’m just catching up with the the last of seasonal crisps, and spotted these Pigs in Blankets Pringles in Sainsburys. I think Pigs in Blankets have to be one of the best parts of a traditional Christmas dinner, and I can see how their flavour can translate well into a variety for crisps.
Now I have to confess to liking meaty flavours of crisps, so these appealed the moment I saw them.
The crisps don’t have much of a visual seasoning, but they smelt like bacon crisps, and reminded me of Frazzles. The flavour of them worked really well. Now Pringles are always moreish, they seem to have made their business on it, but these were new favourite the minute I tried them. The initial taste is that of a wonderfully salty bacon flavour, but this blends quickly into a herby sausage taste. They are pure meaty goodness. I was surprised by how well they had captured both ingredients of the Pigs in Blankets and again just how tasty they had made them. I’m sure they could carry them on after the new year, making them breakfast Pringles, that woudl work, so long as they don’t try and add any egg!
If you like meaty crisps I’d grab these while you can. They’d be perfect for sharing with family and friends on New Year’s Eve… if you are okay with sharing them that is! :-D

New Pringles - Sweet Cinnamon and Mint Choc [By @cinabar]

I received a parcel from Pringles, and boy did it make me smile! Not only was I totally surprised by the innovative flavours, I was also quite surprised to see that the review sample of the Mint Choc ones came with Foodstuff Finds branding on it. Ace!

Okay the personalised packaging didn't quite distract from the fact that these new Pringles were sweet flavoured, so yes that's potato and sugar. Oh my! Now as bizarre as that seems popcorn can carry both sweet and savoury so why not the humble potato? Time to test them out...

I cracked open the mint pack first, and was surprised to find what looked exactly like regular Pringles, without any obvious sprinkles on them. I had it in my mind that they must be covered in a dusting of cocoa to add the chocolate taste, but they looked really plain. I cautiously gave one a taste, and my taste buds weren't quite sure what to make of what they were experiencing. The most obvious first thought was they were minty, but very much so, the peppermint taste was surprisingly strong and cooling. The next flavour to follow was the chocolate and despite there not being any obvious trace of cocoa there was again a very well defined chocolate taste, the sweetness worked well with the fresh taste of mint, but it was then that the more regular flavour of potato and even salted Pringles shone through. It was a bit weird, an acquired taste I guess, but they grew on me, and certainly had the novelty factor! They are very different and you do have to let that go and just enjoy them without worrying too much about the learnt rule you have in your head that crisps should be savoury. Apparently minty choc Pringles work, and you can't knock the fact they do what it says on the tin! They are worth giving a try just to experience something a bit different.

Next up were the cinnamon Pringles, so I think it only fair to explain that cinnamon is my very favourite spice, so obviously excitement set further in when it came to trying these. Unlike the mint ones these did have a bit more visible seasoning on them, as each had a dusting of brown cinnamon spice on them. The aroma reminded me of my favourite cinnamon toast, sweet warm and spicy. The flavour didn't disappoint the taste was lovely like brown sugar mixed with cinnamon; a fabulous helping of Christmas seasoning. Now my taste buds had no quibbles here these are divine, and felt like perfect sweet and savoury snack. There was still a bit of salt and potato but the flavours all seemed happy together working in harmony. I picture eating these curled up watching a suitable seasonal film, filling my senses with wonderful winter spice.

Despite the fact the mint choc variety came with some very cool Foodstuff Finds packaging I have to say the cinnamon variety is where my heart is, these are the one I'll be mourning next season when they disappear. For now though I'm going to stock up and enjoy them while I can. Big thanks to Pringles for sending us our very special pack, and for having such creativity with their new flavours. Now I'm going to follow one of their serving suggestions and try these new varieties as a scoop with ice cream! Oh my potato with a few scoops of fine vanilla ice cream, in for a penny...

Festive Leftovers (Various Sources) [by @NLi10]

It's that time of year again, the time of year that comes after the other two times of year we've just had. This one is the one where you have lots of odds and ends of food left around. Often these are presents or things you took to parties that didn't get finished or just things you sampled while with friends. I took pictures of some of the more unusual ones that I tried and have collated them below.



Chip 'n' Ketchup Pringles

These were brought into work to share and with good reason - they taste a bit wrong. I'm not sure whether it's the brain misinterpreting the artificial flavours or just that Heinz ketchup taste is so pervasive but these were an odd mix. Essentially they are trying to taste like a fried chip with vinegar and ketchup and end up tasting like sweet, sulphurous crisps. Not sure why these haven't caught on!

Bahlsen Zum Fest

Now this is more like it! I'm not sure whether these were bought for Christmas Day or were a present but they appeared at Ms. NLi10's parent’s house on Christmas morning. Being a polite soul I only had a couple but all were of the usual high Bahlsen quality and actually tasted like Germanic festive treats you might purchase at a Christmas market.


Presentation wise they were also well done so these are easily giftable. I may check for these in Aldi/Lidl as that's the kind of place that excels in Euro snacks. A definite hit.


Lir - Fabulous Chocolate Florentines

We came (joint) second place in the Trust quiz and our prize was chosen to be these. We universally expected them to have a crisp base but essentially these are HUGE (5cm diameter) chocolate buttons with adult style toppings.


These included coffee, raspberry meringue, nuts and a dark fruits of forest one. As they are just choc you can see the very bottom light brown one has melted in the box! The choc was of a high quality but it was the smells that they produced and the toppings that raised these above the masses. A deluxe prize if there ever was one.


Border Biscuits Collection

These were a gift to our office by one of our beloved consultants. The tin and its contents are very well presented but a lot of the biscuits were broken due to their crumbly nature. This didn't impact on the taste and the only reason some of these survive is that there was so much else to try. I think the fruit in these was a little hard at times, but this wasn't a problem. Rare to see fruit in a chocolate biscuit work as a flavour balance too, which was a nice surprise.

Pringles Take-Aways: Margherita Pizza (Tesco) [By @Cinabar]

This is the next tube in the selection of new Pringles that I picked up from Tescos. Despite its obvious Italian sounding name, it isn’t actually part of the Mamma Mia range we have been looking at previously. This one is in the Take-Aways range, so the Italian favourite fits in there too.
The crisps don’t have the edge of green herbs on them like the previous flavours, but they certainly have the taste of Italy. There is a nice hint of cheese and tomato, the classic Margherita Pizza ingredients. The creaminess of the cheese was nice, but the tomato taste was more of a background flavour. There are lots of herbs in the taste too, I’m pretty sure I could pick up on Oregano as one of the dominant ones. I like the classic Italian herbs, which is why I have been enjoying the Mamma Mia range so much, and these were also no disappointment.
The crisps had a good mix of flavours that work well together. They are moreish as you would expect from Pringles, and they are a nice idea too. Can’t help hoping they brink out some additional flavours, for example and American Hot Pizza would be fab.

Pringles Mamma Mia: Rosemary & Olive Oil Crisps [Tesco] [By @Cinabar]

Recently I mentioned that I stocked up on a few Pringles’ flavours that I was yet to try, and this tube is part of those reviews. This is from the Mamma Mia range, and as such is part of the Italian flavours they are currently running.
Rosemary and Olive Oil does sound more like the ingredients of a fab salad dressing than a flavour for crisps, but I felt the flavour could work there too. Each one of the Pringles has a little sprinkling of herbs decorating the edges of it which does look nice. The flavour is good and strong and the Rosemary really shines through, giving these crisps and authentic Italian feel. The herb is quite defined, but as it has onion tones it works well on the crisps. There is a milder olive taste too, just giving a nice bit of depth to the flavour and working in harmony with the Rosemary. The two flavours do complement each other well.
They have all the moreish characteristics of regular Pringles, and a good summer feel and taste. These were a simple idea, well executed making a fresh tasting tube of crisps that it would be difficult to dislike.

Pringles Mamma Mia: Tomato, Mozzarella & Basil [Crisps] (Tesco) [By @Cinabar]

I mentioned previously that I have stocked up on some flavours of Pringles that had previously been missing from Foodstuff Finds. These ones are from their new Italian range; Mamma Mia, bringing the taste of Italy to their crisps. It is actually a nice idea to focus on the key tastes of a country, and I’m kind of hoping that this turns into a multi country series!
If you had to sum up ‘Italy’ in a flavour, then these crisps do seem to have covered the basic tastes. Fresh sounding ingredients, and this particular mix of flavours does make a nice starter in Italian restaurants.
When I opened up the pack, two things struck me. First was the aroma, it was very rich with a good hint of cheese and herbs, and the second was that the crisps looked quite pretty, and had red and green speckled seasoning subtly around the edges.
The flavour of these crisps was really good too. There was a good balance of creamy cheese, sweet tomato and a nice hit of basil to balance it out. The tastes all worked really well together, and there was a pleasant hint of salt helping to hold it together. These crisps did taste summery, and have a distinctive Italian hint to their taste too. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of tomato and creamy cheese tastes, it was impressively moreish, but then Pringles usually are!
I do have more of the Mamma Mia range to try, so look out for those write-ups coming soon. If these are anything to go by, that next tube should be something to look forward to.

Pringles Xtreme: Hot Paprika & Smoky Bacon (Asda) (@Pringles ) [By @Cinabar]

What is it with my local Sainsbury’s and Pringles? They have a huge section for Pringles in the main crisp isle, and they always have a separate ‘end of isle’ shelf also filled with Pringles, BUT they rarely stock any of the new or limited edition flavours. There are just mountains of the usual flavours in strangely excessive numbers.
On a recent trip to Asda I was shocked at the amount of different varieties I was yet to try, so I stocked up on a few that I have been missing out on. This is the first of those new tubs!
This particular tube is one of the Xtreme range, meaning it has a bit of a chilli kick mixed in and it seems to be a 3 out 4 on their heat rating.
The taste is mostly that of smoky bacon, which is meaty and salty and very moreish. The paprika taste is present as a spicy aftertaste, but I think there is some hot chilli in there too playing games. The more you eat the more the heat sneaks up on you, it starts with a tingle and ends up as a decent burn. It manages to stay on the side of enjoyable thankfully, and they were certainly not too hot to eat.
The warm spices, meaty tastes with the kick at the end do make these a really well thought out flavour. They were easy to munch on, and everyone sharing them really enjoyed them which is always a good sign. Pringles just are fab crisps, I just wish my local Sainsbury’s would start stocking a few more of the exotic flavours as it is clear I’ve been missing out!

Pringles Xtreme Take Away Smokin Ribs (WH Smiths)

These Pringles have come out in the same range as the Chilli Sauce pack I wrote about earlier in the week. These are quite different though, as instead of having the full heat rating on the pack, these only reach two flames on the scale. Roughly translated by my taste buds this equates to almost no heat at all.
Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the crisps, and all the depth there is in the flavour, from sweetness through to a salty smoky edge. There was also warmth from what I felt was tomato, paprika and even Worcester sauce. There was however no more heat than that which you would expect from a pinch of paprika. Lovely crisps, but I’m not sure how they qualify as ‘Xtreme’.

Pringles Xtreme Flamin’ Chilli Sauce (WH Smiths)

I was recommended these Pringles by someone who hasn’t tried Nando’s Hot crisps, but reckoned these were some of the hottest crisps on the market. The packet has a heat-o-meter on the side, and these are at the level requiring a fire extinguisher, which is at the top of the scale!
These crisps have the wonderful Pringles moreishness and goodness, and a decent kick of chilli too. The majority of chilli crisps on the market are disappointing, but I can’t complain at these as they have a lovely heat about them, and leave your mouth tingling. There is also an aftertaste of garlic and onion and they are seriously nice!
The heat in these may put some people off, but they are by no means as hot as Nando’s Hot crisps. I recommended that the person that suggested try these, try Nandos and let me know what they think. However, if you want something with a really good chilli heat but find Nando’s a bit over powering, these are well worth a purchase!

Pringles Zesty Lime and Chilli (Sainsbury’s)

Recently I seem to have tried quite a few crisps/snacks containing chilli, and my usual problem with them is that they don’t have much of a kick. To be honest these crisps also don’t have much of a heat kick either, they give only a modest tingle from the chilli.
However in this case I really don’t think it matters. The flavour from the lime is spot on, it is fresh, sweet, yet sharp and just absolutely right. Combine this full flavour lime with a small amount of heat from the chilli, add in that Pringles magic to the base, and you end up with a wonderfully moreish crisp! I absolutely loved these; they just made my taste buds happy. They are a lovely refreshing addition to the Pringles selection for the summer months and hopefully beyond.

Pringles Select – Spicy Szechuan Barbecue (29/9/08)

Having already tried Pringles Select - Italian Cheese with a Hint of Garlic, and found them to be pleasant but not as enjoyable as regular Pringles, I was expecting the same from these.
I thought the Spicy Szechuan Barbecue flavour was really good, gentle yet full of tang. I’m not sure that under a blind tasting test I would have described the flavour as Spicy Szechuan Barbecue, but all the same the phrase ‘nice and spicy’ would have sprung to mind.
I would definitely rate them over the cheese and garlic variety, the Spicy Szechuan Barbecue are back on track to the morish flavours you would expect from regular Pringles.
