Muller Rhubarb Crumble (Iceland) By @Cinabar

Get on your baggy jeans and combat boots, the 90s are back in fashion. Take That are on tour and Muller have re-released their classic 1990s flavour Rhubarb Crumble yoghurt. I remember having this back then and thinking the corner style yoghurts were super cool. Having one of these in a school lunch box was really something to look forward to.

This is one of their classic corner yoghurt flavours, with the crumble on one side and the yoghurt with rhubarb compote on the other. I still often buy corner yoghurts, so I had to pick these up when I saw them.

I tried one during a work from home lunch, so not quite getting the canteen kudos it deserved, but still the perfect time to give it a go. Regular readers will know I do like a mix of textures, so corner yoghurts will always be a favourite.

I opened it up and could see the crumble on one side and the yoghurt on the other. I folded in the crumble and gave it a gentle stir, which is when the rhubarb started to show a pinker tinge.

The taste was lovely. The rhubarb is a soft flavour and is not too sharp. There is plenty of creaminess from the yoghurt and vanilla, making it a bit like a custard. And of course there is the lovely crunch of the biscuit.

What a fab dessert. I cannot wait to take one of the others to work, old school, in my lunch box.

I love a bit of nostalgia.

Nesquik Chocoballs Yoghurt (Iceland) By @Cinabar

While searching for new milkshake flavours to try this summer, I did an online grocery shop and used a few key search terms. I looked up Crusha, but only the standard options came up. Then I tried Nesquik. There weren’t any new milkshakes available, but I did spot these Nesquik Chocoballs Yoghurts and added a pack to my basket.

When they arrived, I found there were four yoghurts in the pack. After removing the outer wrap, I noticed all four had a slightly damp patch on the lid in the bottom left corner. The seals didn’t look broken, but I wondered if the yoghurt might have rested on its side during transport or storage. As they were all still sealed and had a long best-before date, I decided to give them a try.

Each yoghurt pot contains a plain yoghurt base with a small section of chocolate cereal balls. I tipped the Chocoballs into the yoghurt and gave it a stir. The yoghurt itself wasn’t too sweet, it had more of a sharp, tangy kick rather than a rich, creamy texture. The Chocoballs were the highlight, adding a nice crunch and a hit of chocolatey sweetness.

They were decent enough yoghurts, but not amazing. Probably healthier than some, due to the lower sugar content, but honestly, I wouldn’t have picked them up if it wasn’t for the Nesquik branding. In the end, they weren’t quite what I was hoping for in terms of a fun new summer flavour.

Limited Edition Fruit Salad Yoghurt (Iceland) By @Cinabar

I usually have a yoghurt with lunch every day, partly for the calcium and health benefits and partly because it adds a little sweetness after a sandwich. I tend to go for low-fat options, but now and then I treat myself to something a bit more indulgent, like a corner yoghurt. This Limited Edition Fruit Salad Yoghurt caught my eye, even though it is not something I would typically pick. I am not usually a fan of squeeze packs.

After finishing my sandwich, I gave it a go. The packaging suggested shaking it before eating, but since the yoghurt was quite thick, shaking did not seem to do much. I gave it a bit of a squeeze to help mix it up before opening the pack.

The flavour was surprisingly good, sweet and fruity, with plenty of pineapple and raspberry. The combination really does taste like the classic Fruit Salad sweet. I have to admit, it works well as a yoghurt, and I really enjoyed it. I would definitely buy these again as a treat because the flavour was just so much fun.

Alpro - Vegan yogurt style snacks - Blueberry & Cherry [@NLi10]

 I've been cutting back on the old dairy recently, but I'm yet to find a truly satisfying yogurt - but as Alpro make decent breakfast milks (but not for tea) so lets see what's up here.

This vegan version has plant based blueberry and cherry versions - both of the flavours are plants so shouldn't be an issue

They look like classic childhood cheap yogurts

Turns out it's essentially soy and sugar - which is fine, but surely Alpro are the almond experts - why aren't they in here.

And why such low fruit percentages?!

And what's a vegetal anyway

Looks Ok though - the lovely clear plastic is a great touch - but the label makes these a pain to recycle so I bet most just get chucked.

The consistency is a little too smooth - but would be perfect in a blended drink.  The flavour just isn't strong enough - why isn't there lovely little specks of the fruit to explode throughout?  Maybe it makes the soya go weird, who knows.

Overall though a nice, small desert.  Surely designed for the diet conscious and not me who wants to gorge on fruity goodness.  I've got loads of fresh fruit to add to the remaining ones though so a good time will be had.

Taste The Difference Banoffee Pie Inspired Yoghurts (Sainsburys) By @Cinabar

I wanted a bit of a treat this lunchtime. I usually have a low-fat yoghurt, but today I picked up a fun-sounding Banoffee Pie Inspired Yoghurt, from the Taste The Difference range at Sainsburys. There are two in the pack, and they are a little more expensive than my usual six packs of fruit flavours, but they are a bit of a treat.

Inside the pack is quite a plain-looking dark cream yoghurt, with biscuit bits mixed in. I gave it a try, and it may not look exciting, but the flavour really was. It was a rich, sweet toffee-flavoured yoghurt with a creamy, sweet banana taste running through it, a complete delight. There is also a lovely creaminess too, and the yoghurt is thick and luxurious. The biscuit bits are soft as they have been in the yoghurt, but they do still add a little texture and a nice richness to the flavour. My conclusion is that yoghurts usually come in six packs, and there are seven days in the week, so every other week I might add a nice pack of treat yoghurts in twin pots to enjoy. These Taste The Difference Banoffee Pie Inspired Yoghurts are so nice, I can't wait to have them again and see what other interesting flavours are available. 

Muller SKYR - Raspberry & Hazelnut Granola [@NLi10]

 I wanted a quick post-supermarket snack and realised I’d not had a posh yogurt in ages. My god they’ve gone up in price!

I settled on a SKYR, as it was different enough to pique my curiosity and yet still basically a fruit corner.

It’s made of Quark! Well - isn’t everything? This just means the strange milk derivatives and not the sub-atomic particle, but I guess technically it’s both.

The lid sounds enough like a cat thing that both cats were summoned, they were both very briefly interested in the lid - but neither liked the taste so I was left to tip my granola into my quark.

It’s got a different texture to that which I expected, but it’s really nice. Not too sour, not too sharp. The granola was properly nutty and fruity in all the right ways.

I discovered on a future trip that if I’d bought a multipack these aren’t that expensive, but I think I’d rather just have them as a secret late night treat occasionally than have a stash ready.

Makes me wonder if they do vegan style ones made of coconut or similar because I’d be very interested in that.

Muller Mississippi Mud Pie Corner Yoghurt (Asda) by @Cinabar

People are very excited that this Muller Mississippi Mud Pie Corner Yoghurt is back. It was released in the 1990s and has been sorely missed; even newspapers have been writing about its comeback. I have to confess that I didn’t remember it the first time around, but it seems that this has some sort of cult status. My online order this week was with Asda, and as these were listed in their new section, I thought I’d give it a try and see what all the fuss is about.

 

They were sold individually, so I just bought a couple. I generally buy yoghurts in multipacks, but I couldn’t see this flavour sold that way. Inside the tub is a corner with a chocolate biscuit crumble, vanilla yoghurt, and chocolate sauce. I gave it a try, and it was good. The flavour isn’t too chocolatey, as the yoghurt is a plain base flavour, but the chocolate shines through. The crumble part adds a nice biscuit taste and a bit of crumble. So yeah, these yoghurts get a thumbs up from me; I thoroughly enjoyed them. I have to be honest; I’m not sure they needed the articles in the papers announcing their comeback, but they are a nice addition to the range and one I’d buy again.

Muller Light Banana Split Yoghurt (Iceland) By @Cinabar

This is the latest new flavour from Muller and it is in their Light range, which is helpful after all the Easter chocolate. The new variety is Muller Light Banana Split, and I was looking forward to it. Banana as a flavour seems to be as controversial as Marmite. Some people really hate it and some like me rather like it.

I opened up the pot and found inside it a light coloured yoghurt speckled with chocolate. I was trying to think what a Banana Split was like a retro dessert. I think it was banana, ice cream, chocolate sauce, cream and a cherry on top. Now idea how that went out of fashion! This yoghurt is just a banana base with some chocolate sprinkles in it, which, although nice, doesn’t seem quite as exciting as the dessert would make me in a restaurant.

Taste wise, it was nice, there was sweet banana which tasted quite natural, and the chocolate added a little bit of cocoa flavour to the mix, but sadly not that much. As someone who is in the camp that likes banana flavoured treats, this worked for me. Muller already makes a Banana and Custard flavour yoghurt though and this Muller Light Banana Split doesn’t seem to add enough difference to make it worthwhile having both. I think it needed a heavier hit from the dark chocolate.

Barratt Fruit Salad Dessert Pots (Iceland) By @Cinabar

Yay, new desserts in Iceland and they are flavoured with traditional Barratt’s sweets. I have picked up these Barratt Fruit Salad Dessert Pots which taste of the raspberry and pineapple wrapped classic sweets. From the look of the tubs I was reminded of some mousses (now there is a plural that sounds wrong) I used to have as a kid. They were in the same shaped tubs and were also bright fruit flavours. Anyone remember them? I looked again at the box and wondered if these “Dessert Pots” were code for fruit mousse, part of me was definitely hoping so.

 

I took the lid off one of the tubs and found a more liquid looking dessert, in a very bright shade of yellow. It isn’t at all subtle, but looked like a bright custard. I gave it a try and as bright as the colour was the flavour is as strong; sweet and fruity. They really do have all that pineapple and raspberry fruit salad flavour from the classic sweets, they are sweet and yet tart but spot on, did I mention they are not subtle.

I noticed though the flavour was like yoghurt. I turned over the box and the ingredients clearly show these are yoghurts. It seems a weird idea to describe yoghurts as “dessert pots” but perhaps they are trying to entice a younger audience who might be put off by the thought of a yoghurt? These are lovely whatever they describe themselves as and I’ll be picking up some other flavours if I can find them.

Oykos Apple Cinnamon Greek Yoghurt (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Happy Cinnamon season everyone, the Christmas lights are up and seasonal spiced foods are in the shops. Gosh I love cinnamon, I hate that it isn’t around all year, so when we do get the limited edition cinnamon goodies at Christmas I do go out of my way to try everything. These new Oykos Apple Cinnamon Greek Yoghurts are my latest purchase. The yoghurts are layered and there is a fruity apple and cinnamon compote at the bottom topped with ‘Greek Style’ yoghurt. Does that mean it is or it isn’t Greek yoghurt? Greek Style sounds a bit of an odd choice of words, but I guess it doesn’t matter.

I tried the yoghurt and I was expecting apple to be dominant flavour with a hint of cinnamon but much to my surprise there was lots of sweet spice from the cinnamon in the flavour, the apple sweetened it but the cinnamon shone through. The yoghurt on top was thick and creamy and also a delight. It paired well with the fruit compote and it felt like a proper treat to eat. Oh my these Oykos Apple Cinnamon Greek Yoghurts were a good purchase, if you are a cinnamon fan you need to put these on your list, they are cinnamon heaven!

Christmas Pudding Flavour Yoghurt (Morrisons) By @Cinabar

Halloween is now done for this year, so I think Christmas goodies are now fair game. First up we have from Morrisons The Best range this new Christmas Pudding Flavour Yoghurt. I had this as a sweet treat at lunch time after a sandwich. It should have been with a turkey sandwich (but it was ham and tomato chutney) but the yoghurt was festive at least. I pulled back the lid and the yoghurt was pale in colour, but it was speckled with spices. The texture of the yoghurt it really good, it is thick and creamy and feels very rich.

The flavour is an impressive recreation of Christmas pudding and it did it so better than I thought it would. There was lots of fruit and spice in the flavour, the raisins shone through as did the punchy hit of citrus peel. I really enjoy Christmas spices and cinnamon so found myself scraping the pot after lunch. There is also quite a bit of cream in the recipe and this made the whole thing rather luxurious to eat, which was nice to brighten up a particularly cold dark Monday. The clocks went back so everything looks dark early now! Let’s get the Christmas stuff out and brighten it up.

Muller Light Strawberry Daiquiri Yoghurt (Iceland) By @Cinabar

I think I may have become a bit sceptical over the years and as such when I bought these Muller Light Strawberry Daiquiri Yoghurts I thought to myself oh wow, an interesting way to packaging up a regular strawberry yoghurt and market it with a summer twist. Yes I know, I should have more faith.

 

I had one of the yoghurts as a lunchtime treat, they are part of the Muller Light range so lower in calorie and it is nice to have something sweet after a sandwich which doesn’t come with too much guilt. The yoghurt is pink and looks much like a regular strawberry yoghurt but I’m pleased to say the flavour was nicely different. I could pick up on the flavour of lime which was really nice with it, it made it a little sourer but refreshing in the muggy weather. There was still plenty of strawberry and fruit too in the yoghurt. I was at first disappointed that all the flavours were the same in the multipack as many new Muller varieties come in mixed packs, but by the end of the yoghurt I was looking forward to the next one. This Muller Light Strawberry Daiquiri Yoghurt is a nice twist on a standard flavour with the cocktail element and nicely done with the added lime.

Muller Light - Millionaire Shortbread (Asda) By @cinabar

These were a replacement item from my online order at Asda for a different type of Muller yoghurts that I had ordered. We have had a few decent hits with random replacement items, and even managed to try some new things I wouldn’t have bought so I was quite pleased when these arrived. Normally these multipacks of Muller Light have two flavours in the pack but this particular set is all one variety, Muller Light Millionaire Shortbread, they must be be pretty confident everyone will like them.

  

I had the first one with my lunch as a bit of sweet treat without the guilt. It was a really good sweet treat too, the flavour was creamy sweet with lots of biscuit and rich caramel tones. There wasn’t too much chocolate but there was some real bits in the yoghurt which added a nice texture. I was impressed, they did have all the elements of the Millionaire Shortbread taste with a heavy hit of caramel and I really liked them. This was a lovely finish to my lunch and I’m looking forward to the rest of the multipack of these Muller Light Millionaire Shortbread yoghurts.

Muller Light – Bakery Inspired Cinnamon Bun Yoghurt (Asda) By @Cinabar

Working from home has increased my consumption of yoghurt. Mainly because being at home I’m next to my fridge rather than risking the shared fridge in the office, where things disappear, admittedly mainly milk. I do buy a lot of the Muller Light yoghurts anyway but discovering the Bakery Inspired range excited me, there is this Cinnamon Bun flavour. I love cinnamon, it is my favourite spice and, as you probably guessed, Cinnamon Bun is my favourite pastry. There is also a lemon drizzle yoghurt in the pack, which sounds nice too, but has no cinnamon! So I think you can guess we started first.

 

This yoghurt is a pale cream in colour and has a decent creamy thickness. The flavour is divine! The yoghurt is sweet, there is cinnamon and the flavour of pastry, it was so good. The flavour is creamy too and it tastes bad for you. However it is 0% fat and has no added sugar so is a proper guilt free cinnamon treat. I realise this is a winter flavour but honestly cinnamon isn’t just for Christmas. The spice is warming and works so well with a little sweetness, I was scraping the yoghurt pot out by the end.

Muller Light - Jam Roly Poly Flavour Yoghurt (Iceland) By @Cinabar

One of my lunch time treats is a Muller Light yoghurt, they seem to have enough new flavours to keep me entertained too. This week I have found these Muller Light - Jam Roly Poly Flavour Yoghurt, which sounded like a interesting new flavour, it is part of the new desserts range they have. I also have the Banoffee pie flavour too, but that is for another day.

These yoghurts sound far more interesting than they are, the pot contains a pink yoghurt that tastes mostly of fruit, like most yoghurts and is a nice pink colour. There is a flavour of sponge, and it is nice, but it wasn’t quite as wow as I had hoped.

The good thing about these yoghurts though is that they are lower in fat and calories so they are a nice sweet treat after a sandwich, just enough to quench that bit of sugar craving. They are always nice even if not necessarily as exciting as I’d hoped. Fingers crossed the Banoffee ones are good!

Oykos Yoghurt - Date Sauce, Sticky Toffee and Cake (Asda) By @Cinabar

Strangely enough I didn’t eat that much yoghurt before lockdown, I’d have the occasional one if I saw a new flavour or something interesting but it wasn’t really a regular occurrence for me. Since the lockdown began I have been having one with my lunch almost every day, it has sort of become a new routine. This has also meant I’ve been on the search (via online shopping) to find interesting flavours and new varieties. This is the first I’ve seen of the brand Oykos, and if I’m completely honest the brand is so new to me I’m not even sure how to pronounce it. Naturally I chose the flavour that sounded the best; Date Sauce, Sticky Toffee and Cake.

The cake layer is a crumb at the bottom mixed with toffee sauce, then there is a layer of Greek style yoghurt and on top of that a date sauce. It looked very luxurious. I liked the mix of flavours too, the date was sweet and tasted naughty, but the rich toffee sauce if where this yoghurt really excelled, it was wonderfully indulgent. The sponge added texture which was nice and made it feel more like a sticky toffee pudding. The yoghurt was creamy and added a nice contrast to the flavours. This was an indulgent treat and not my usual low fat yoghurt, but I will be buying them again.

Nestle Lindahls Kvarg White Chocolate (Sainsbury’s) By @SpectreUK

I'm well into the third week of my gym being closed. I've been going cold turkey on the place since then. I'm really missing the outside pool and the sauna. I also miss the people, as I like to chat with anyone and everyone there. It can be often be a very friendly and relaxing place. For someone who has been rehabilitating from a second knee operation, amongst other past operations, this passed couple of weeks has been an interesting time. Especially as my physiotherapist's last words to me in January echoed my surgeon's from before Christmas; "keep up with all your exercises and don't put any weight on". The is especially trying when I'm still quite greedy and I also like to drink the odd beer or three a week.

So I've been carrying out my latest cunning plan to do all of my regular abs exercises and stretches that I usually split between home and the gym everyday at home instead. Fortunately I have some old free weights I still use for upper body weight lifting, which I've now added in squats with weights, as well as single leg squats and calf raises three days a week. I'm still watching my calories and not overeating. I was attending yoga classes three times a week at the gym, but memorised some of the yoga moves and now do yoga at home on three of the days that I don't weight lift on. I go for a twenty minute walk and try to do a short jog almost everyday. I weighed myself at the same time I usually do last Saturday morning and I haven't put any weight on yet, and my old bod isn't looking too shabby, so my new home exercise routine is going well.

Everyday I have a high protein yoghurt with my lunch. One of the brands I usually eat are Nestle Lindahls Kvarg, which is produced in Sweden and is mainly made with quark from milk. I like Nestle Lindahls Kvarg vanilla flavour as it especially goes well with fruit, and I also like their strawberry flavour. This new White Chocolate flavour sounded quite a treat due to the fact that white chocolate is probably my favourite type of chocolate, with milk chocolate as a very close second. I've been missing out on my white hot chocolate drinks every night recently because milk is fairly scarce at the moment.

On peeling back the lid the white yoghurt inside had a smell of white chocolate and yoghurt. The problem I've found with products that claim to be chocolate flavoured is that they are often chocolate flavoured but predominantly taste of whatever they are supposed to be, such as in this occasion I'm now expecting this white chocolate Nestle Lindahls Kvarg to taste predominantly of yoghurt with a hint of white chocolate. I may be wrong, as I haven't actually tasted it yet… I know this sounds a bit nuts, but at least I'm honest, as I write blogs whilst I'm tasting whatever I'm writing about at the time.

I was also worried that this white chocolate Nestle Lindahls Kvarg would possibly taste like the vanilla flavour. I like the vanilla flavour, as I mentioned earlier, but I've previously had crisp flavours from the same brand claiming to be a different flavour and they ended up tasting exactly like the original flavour. Here we have an example of a yoghurt that does taste a little of white chocolate, I'll grant it that, and it also doesn't taste like their vanilla yoghurt, but it does taste predominantly of yoghurt. This is not a bad thing, but an actual white chocolate bar has more of a creamy flavour to it, so the yoghurt pulled my tastebuds away from that creaminess. On a blind taste test I'd probably pick this yoghurt out as a less flavoursome vanilla yoghurt from a different brand, and not as white chocolate flavoured. Don't get me wrong, I'd have this Nestle Lindahls Kvarg white chocolate flavour again, but if it's scarce then their vanilla flavour is just as good if slightly better, as at least it tastes of what it's supposed to be.

Muller Light Key Lime Pie Flavour Yoghurt (Asda) By @cinabar

Surprisingly when I did my Asda order there were a decent selection of interesting yoghurts available, and I was pleased to even find these Muller Light Key Lime Pie Flavour ones I hadn’t tried before. I love Key Lime Pie, as I am a big fan of citrus flavours. It is like a lime version of lemon meringue pie. Key Lime Pie is my first choice of dessert in American themed restaurants too, although it is more difficult to find the real thing in most restaurants.
The yoghurt is both fat free and sugar free which is impressive. I, like many others, am less active at the minute due to the Covid-19 lockdown. I am going out for a walk each day, but my watch is telling me quite clearly my step count has significantly reduced even so. It is nice then to find something a bit healthier that is still sweet and tasty.

I peeled back the lid and hadn’t quite been expecting the yoghurt to be pale green in colour. Pale green is not an appetising colour for a food substance, and it seems particularly wrong when it comes to yoghurt for some reason. The flavour though was lovely. I could pick up on the sweet lime flavour, but also there was a wonderful creamy aftertaste like pastry (or biscuit), this gave the yoghurt the proper feel of a Key Lime Pie. The texture was thick and creamy too. Think these Muller Light Key Lime Pie Flavour Yoghurts are going to be a nice refreshing treat for the warmer weather. When all of this lockdown is over it is worth looking out for Key Lime Pie in restaurants, but in the mean time these get the thumbs up as nice treat.

Muller Light - Gin & Tonic Inspired Yoghurts (Ocado) By @Cinabar

There have been a lot of new flavours from Muller over the years but these Gin & Tonic ones really do seem quite different. I was amused to see that the the new pack has a banner down the side that states they are the official yoghurt of British Athletics, which is a bit of a weird choice for athletes who presumably aren’t drinking, or perhaps that is the point, they have this instead. Not sure it would have worked that well as a Dry January thing, but never mind. :-D

There are two flavours in the pack Gin & Tonic and Pink Gin and Elderflower. The first yoghurt I tried was the Gin & Tonic, which was a pale cream colour without bits. The flavour was quite delicate, citrus like with a nice taste of tonic. I found it to work remarkably well, and it was a sweet and refreshing flavour, a proper palette cleanser.

The elderflower yoghurt was also a pale cream in colour, I think I had just assumed it would be more pink. There is a vague hint of pink, but I’d still describe it overall as cream in colour. The flavour was still rather refreshing, and it had a lovely delicate taste. There are tones of floral elderflower, a nice sweetness but still that refreshing tonic aftertaste. I liked this yoghurt, again it was something a bit different.
These new Muller Light - Gin & Tonic Inspired Yoghurts are an unusual flavour combo. They manage to have delicate flavours with a thick and creamy base. I think these are summery yoghurts, with lovely fresh flavours. I don’t buy Muller that often, but these were a rather fab find. So nice to see an unusual flavour that works.
