This 5% in volume Red Alert was brewed by Love Lane. The back of the can was most helpful. It was produced with dark, crystal, chocolate and wheat malts. It was hopped with Magnum, Idaho 7, Amarillo, and Mosiac hops. So, I’m expecting caramel, toffee and a little chocolate from the malts, and tropical fruits from the hops in the taste.
Red Alert is not a very scary sounding beer for Halloween. I’m a little disappointed to hear that it doesn’t have any rye added in the brewing to give it further redness. I guess with all those malt flavours, it probably doesn’t need any added spiciness.
Now all I have to do is choose what I’m going to eat for my dinner to drink my ruby red IPA with. I think fish and chips and a battered sausage from the local Chippy are in order. They shouldn’t take too long to deliver, so I can catch the final of the traitors.
On opening the can there was a woody caramel sweet aroma from the malts, and citrus tropical fruits from the hops. This Red Alert really is a ruby red coloured ale. Heavy with malts to begin with, those of toffee and caramel with a touch of chocolate. This was all before the zesty tropical fruity bitterness that kicked in, with a little woody pine into the aftertaste. Boo!
