Bounty Snowballs (Ocado) By @SpectreUK

I’m not sure why I’ve been tasked with this blog. First off, I’ve been ill for the last day or so due to some sort of bug or food poisoning. Second, I’m not that keen on coconut and chocolate.

Bounty Bars are generally the last bars I go for in a tub of celebrations. I don’t dislike them, but I’m not that fussed either. I did, however, eat and enjoy Snowballs when I was a kid. I sometimes had them in my lunchbox at school or for a lunchtime pudding at home.

These Bounty Snowballs by Mars seem a natural leap into Snowball territory. They seem smaller than regular Snowballs from when I was a kid. Either that, or I was smaller back then.

On opening the packet these chocolate coated mallows covered in desiccated coconut smelt just like regular Snowballs. They tasted as sticky as I remember them.

I know I haven’t had one for years, but these Bounty Snowballs tasted exactly like the Snowballs I had when I was a kid. That definitely wasn’t a bad thing at all.

Bounty Crispy Rolls (Asda) – By @Cinabar

Bounty, rather like Marmite, tends to divide opinion. I personally love it. I like the combination of chocolate and coconut, and even that firm but soft grainy texture that some people dislike works for me.

Here we have a new bar from Bounty, the Bounty Crispy Rolls. It is nice to see something new from Bounty. This is a lighter snack, with 61 calories per stick, so 122 for both if you eat them at the same time, like me.

They consist of Bounty coconut encased in a wafer, coated in milk chocolate, and finished with a dusting of coconut. This meant there were bits in the packet when it opened, but thankfully not too many.

I gave the chocolate stick a try and found it to be pleasant rather than anything special. It does not have the same satisfying Bounty feel of biting into a full-size bar. I liked the crispy texture from the wafer, which was nice and crunchy before softening with the coconut filling. The flavour, however, did not have enough coconut. The ratios seem different, and that wonderful coconut kick just was not as strong. The chocolate was more prominent, which was fine, but something else in the taste, perhaps the wafer, added an edge that distracted from the coconut goodness and made these a bit mediocre.

They were okay, but they should have been so much better. I love a Bounty bar, and although I like the idea of a lower-calorie treat, I think I will stick to the original. Also, Bounty, if you are considering bringing out something new, how about bringing back the red Bounty with dark chocolate? Give the people what they want.

Bounty Ice Cream (Iceland) By @cinabar

This is another of the new Spring to Summer releases of ice cream from Iceland. The weather may not be there yet but at least we have new ice creams to cheer us up. I can’t believe it is nearly June and the weather is still cool, rainy and even stormy. Oh well, the heating is on but I have the Bounty Ice Cream out to make up.

Inside the box are 6 Bounty Ice Creams all individually wrapped. They are 135 calories per bar which seems quite reasonable for what feels like a naughty treat. Under the wrapper there is a bar of chocolate coated coconut ice cream, with coconut in the chocolate too. The ice cream is super sweet and creamy and had a lovely coconut flavour, there was some coconut texture in there too but it was smoother than a regular Bounty. The chocolate was a decent thickness and cracked nicely over the ice cream, I liked that there was coconut texture here too. I know the texture of coconut is a bit of a Marmite thing but I like it, and I loved the tropical taste too. We may not have the sunshine yet but these Bounty Ice Creams will be perfect when it does arrive.

Mango Bounty (Russia via GB Gifts) By @Cinabar

As someone who loves a limited edition chocolate bar I can’t help browse online to see what is available in other countries and I found myself ordering this Mango Bounty which is originally from Russia (I think). Although we can get Bounty chocolate bars in milk are dark chocolate here we really don’t get limited edition flavours from them. As Bounty is a coconut bar the mix of mango with it sounded perfect for that tropical feel.

The bar, like regular Bounty, is in two pieces but unlike regular Bounty the bar inside is a bright orange colour. I took a bite and as much as I like coconut and mango I found the flavour to be a bit lacklustre. It was alright, there was plenty of coconut and the mango fruit was added sweetness but it was a little syrupy and somehow lacking depth. It was also more moist than a regular Bounty and had therefore lost that nice almost crispy texture. It was okay, a pleasant enough bar but I found myself wishing it was a regular Bounty. As someone who’s love of new and limited edition bars has fuelled a good section of this blog wishing for a regular version of a limited edition is a bad sign indeed. As exciting as this Mango Bounty sounded it isn’t one I’ll be repurchasing.

New Bounty Secret Centre Biscuits (By @SpectreUK)

I'm finding it difficult to grasp where the "secret" is with these new Bounty Secret Centre Biscuits? Personally I haven't eaten a Bounty milk chocolate bar since I was very young. I determined at an early age I just didn't like them. They have too much coconut flavour for my liking and not enough milk chocolate. A multitude of other chocolate bars were available, even more now, so I've never looked back. I even avoid Bounty mini-chocolate bars in variety boxes, and generally scoff mostly everything else. Don't get me wrong, as I've always liked coconut biscuits, but too much coconut puts me off a bit. Surely "Secret Centre" should entail not telling us what is in the biscuit in the first place? Calling it Bounty to start with kind of gives away the "secret"!

Anyway, on opening the packet there are eight chocolate disc shaped biscuits that look a little like roughly four centimetre wide Wagon Wheels. On biting into the first one… Okay, I'm lying there… I never actually bite into biscuits… my mouth is too big (as you may guess), so I generally just dump them in my gob and chew. These Bounty ("Secret Centre") biscuits have a decent crunch to them and a light creamy coconut centre. The coconut flavour is not overpowering. In fact these Bounty Secret Centre Biscuits taste a little like creamy coconut biscuits covered in milk chocolate. Quite a genius idea, I may add.

Bounty Coconut Hot Chocolate (Waitrose) [By @Cinabar]

Following on from the rather delicious Bounty spread I tried the other week, the other new coconut product on the shelves is this new Bounty Coconut Hot Chocolate. Unlike the spread this does actually contain chocolate, and of course plenty of coconut. The drink states that it can be made with either hot milk or hot water, but for me it has to be hot milk for a proper drink.
The pack states that you need three teaspoons per mug and that the drink has “chocolate pieces”. After I had put some in the mug I had to fish around to find the chocolate drops to take a picture of, they were there but there weren't that may and they blended in wth the powder as it was all the same colour.

I microwaved some hot milk and mixed it all together, the chocolate and powder dissolved easily and well. It's so quick and easy to microwave milk, and did I mention these drinks are so much nicer with milk than water.
I took a sip and was very impressed with the flavour of the Bounty hot chocolate. The flavour of coconut was soothing and very creamy. The sweetness from the chocolate was spot on and the milky base worked well. It was very much like drinking a liquidised Bounty bar, which was certainly its aim. The balance of coconut and chocolate was at a good level, and it managed to feel pleasingly tropical too.
My only negative comment is the pouch this hot chocolate comes in. They cost £1.80 but don’t have much contents at all, it will get used up in no time, particularly if you are making drinks for two. It is not like having a proper jar of the stuff. Still the drink is a bit of a treat and not an every day drink, but I would just prefer a bigger container!

Bounty Bar Coconut Spread (Morrisons) [By @Cinabar]

This jar of Bounty Spread arrived with our online order. I looked at it curiously, as I would have thought a Bounty spread would have chocolate in it. A Bounty bar consists of a soft coconut filling and a thick coating of milk chocolate, but this was just coconut. I would say that the chocolate element of the Bounty was significant enough to warrant being represented, so I had a bit of disappointment when looking at the jar.
Next there was a quandary, what do you spread Bounty Coconut Spread on? I couldn’t picture what it would work on. Coconut on toast just sounded weird, actually everything I though of sounded weird. I was more guided by what was on the shelf, and I popped a Giant Crumpet in the toaster and waited. The next issue was butter or no butter? I went no butter, which turned out to be the right choice.

The spread wasn’t that solid and thus spread quite easily, it seemed to melt a little on the hot crumpet and go slightly glossy. I could see the flecks of real coconut in it too. Finally the taste test, oh my word this stuff is good. It is sweet, creamy, and has the most gorgeous rich coconut taste. It is so soothing and smooth, and so much better than the centre of a Bounty, and I say that as someone who loves a Bounty bar. I’m not sure how they did it but they created something quite magic here. It really doesn’t need any added chocolate.
At least I’ve answered the question; what do you put Bounty Coconut spread on? The answer is everything, toast, crumpets, scotch pancakes, waffles, digestive biscuits even - we’ve never finished a jar of spread so quickly!

Mounds (Cybercandy) vs Bounty (WH Smiths)

Well I still have a decent stash of goodies from my London trip and visit to Cybercandy, so I thought it was about time I tucked into another product. This one reminded me so much of a Bounty bar, that I thought I would do a direct comparison.
Both bars are split into two smaller bars, and visually the Mounds bar has the darker chocolate. The Mounds bar is much softer than the Bounty, the bar was so soft it actually had some cardboard inside the plastic wrapper to support and protect it. The centre of the Mounds is more buttery in flavour and does not quite have as strong a taste of coconut as the Bounty.
I think the Bounty had stronger tasting chocolate too, despite the slightly lighter colour. I prefer the meatiness of a firmer bar and the defined coconut flavour, so I have to declare Bounty the winner!
