Soreen: Sticky Toffee Loaf (Ocado) By @SpectreUK

Soreen: Sticky Toffee Loaf

Some people go with health kicks and vow to lose weight for their new Year's Resolutions. I'm starting off the year rather naughtily. I do love a Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard for dessert. I've been rehabilitating my knee and shoulder after past operations for many years now. I workout for several hours a day to strengthen, so I can afford to be naughty for my sweet tooth puddings.

This Soreen Sticky Toffee Loaf was a sticky toffee flavoured loaf with dates and toffee flavoured pieces. It was described as "the perfect pudding loaf" on the packet. It also says to 'try me warm' and the image shows custard so that is how we decided to try it.

Soreen: Sticky Toffee Loaf

For cooking instructions the packet suggested to toast the loaf under the grill. We couldn't find instructions on the packet on how to warm up the cake in the microwave, so we decided to microwave it for 60 seconds. We cut pieces before microwaving, and that was difficult enough with a really sharp knife, we were serving it with spoons, so figured this could be interesting.

So, first off 60 seconds in the microwave. It smelt lovely at this point. It wasn't oozy with toffee, and had no accompanying toffee sauce packet. Then we heated custard in the microwave. And finally heated the loaf again for another 30 seconds before serving. It smelt really good. It was starting to get a bit squidgy, with a nice soft texture. My spoon did go through it, and it was easy to eat. It was good and tasty. It went very well heated up with the custard on top.

Soreen: Sticky Toffee Loaf

This Soreen Sticky Toffee Loaf wasn't overly sweet, but it was still enjoyable. Having said that there wasn't a lot of sugar or fat in the ingredients so this was a healthier Sticky Toffee Pudding version. I'd probably have this again, but for another 100 or so calories, I could have had a really oozy indulgent Sticky Toffee Pudding instead.

Information on the packet: One fifth of the cake (52g) is 153 calories, 1g of fat, 8.2g of sugar and 0.27g salt. Vegan friendly and a good source of fibre. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Lift Bars Chocolate Orange flavour (Soreen #Gifted) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Lift Bars Chocolate Orange flavour

Fancy a pick me up in a cake bar? Well, this last of the three flavours of Soreen Lift Bars may fit the bill. The other two flavours were Blueberry and also Raspberry & Vanilla, which seemed a little more healthy than this Soreen Lift Bars Chocolate Orange flavour. I enjoyed eating and blogging about the other two flavours, so I'm hoping for the same experience here too.

High in vitamin B12 these Soreen Lift Bars are supposed to reduce tiredness and fatigue, while also improving our central nervous system and metabolism. I left this Soreen Lift Bars Chocolate Orange flavour until last because it sounded the most "cakey". I know that's not a real word, but I'm a blogger and we make words up all the time.

Soreen Lift Bars Chocolate Orange flavour

On opening the Chocolate Orange Lift Bar there was a strong orange and chocolate aroma. There were lots of chocolate chips in the Lift Bar, which made it feel even more cakey. On taste this Chocolate Orange Lift Bar tasted very much like the name suggests. There was plenty of orange flavour to start with and the chocolate chips had a mild crunch, adding to the flavour.

This Chocolate Orange Lift Bar was very tasty indeed, and certainly felt more of a pudding than the other two bars. It tasted like a healthy sweet snack for after dinner, rather than my ubiquitous Soreen Loaf after my lunchtime sandwich. I'll certainly have to get some more.

Information on the packet; With 4 x Lift Bars at 139 calories per bar, and having 1.8g of fat, 7.4g of sugar, and 0.22g of salt. Vegan friendly, please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Lift Bars Raspberry & Vanilla flavour (Soreen #Gifted) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Lift Bars Raspberry & Vanilla flavour

I do appreciate it when I'm sent stuff to blog about. Of course I try my best to be unbiased and write a fair and honest review. Having said that, I'm quite a fan of Soreen loaves and generally have one of whatever flavour with my lunch everyday. Soreen have recently brought out these Lift Bars. I've already written about the Blueberry flavour, and liked it even though I don't particularly like Blueberries. So today I'm writing about the Soreen Lift Bars Raspberry & Vanilla flavour.

Okay, I'll just repeat some of the technical stuff first. These Soreen Lift Bars are naturally high in vitamin B12, which is good for our central nervous system and metabolism. One of my favourite flavours, especially where ice cream is concerned, is Raspberry & Vanilla or Raspberry Ripple. Why a food producer hasn't brought out a low calorie pot of Raspberry Ripple, I don't know (hint, hint).

On opening a loaf of Soreen Lift Bars Raspberry & Vanilla flavour I could smell the raspberries and see their flecks in the loaf. Biting in there was certainly sweetness from the raspberries, and a creamy flavour from the added vanilla. Very moreish indeed, this Raspberry & Vanilla Lift Bar didn't last very long at all before I'd devoured it. It was really good. Don't get me wrong, I did like the Blueberry flavour Lift Bar, but this Soreen Lift Bars Raspberry & Vanilla flavour is my favourite so far. No big surprise there.

Information on the packet; Each of the four loaves in the packet had 138 calories, with 1.4g of fat, 8.3g of sugar, and 0.22g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Lift Bars Blueberry (Soreen #Gifted) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Lift Bars Blueberry

I am a creature of habit. I do love a Soreen loaf after my sandwich and crisps, and before my fruit and protein yoghurt for lunch. These new Soreen Lift Bars are naturally high in vitamin B12, which is important for your central nervous system and metabolism. There are three flavours, and Soreen very kindly sent me a packet of four of each flavour. There is Chocolate Orange and also Raspberry & Vanilla, both of which are usually favourite flavours of mine. So, I thought I should go with the Blueberry flavour first.

It's not that I don't like Blueberries, it's just that I don't think they taste of anything. I've had Blueberries spoil many a fruit bowl to the extent where I can't be bothered with them anymore. Cinabar had a Sweet Texas Pie in an American smokehouse the other day, which had Blueberries in it, and I couldn't taste them either. The butterscotch was very nice though. Incidentally, an American friend of ours said that a Sweet Texas Pie has been made up by the restaurant, and doesn't actually exist, and he should know as he's a Texan.

On first opening the packet I noticed that this Soreen Lift Bar Blueberry is a longer bar than the usual Soreen loaves, which goes some way to explain the extra calories. I also noticed that there were shredded pieces of blueberries throughout the bar once I'd bitten in. Been as though I usually can't see the point in blueberries, I liked the sweet flavour, and could tell they were Blueberries. I also liked the healthy feeling of this Lift Bar, and would choose them again, especially for the extra vitamin kick.

Information on the packet; Each 42g loaf has 133 calories, with 0.9g of fat, 8.3g of sugar, and 0.22g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Lemon Mini Loaves (Morrisons) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Lemon Mini Loaves

I always try to have a Soreen Mini Loaf with my lunch every day, after my sandwiches and crisps. They fit perfectly into my lunchbox, or just to have a quick sweet fruity snack with a cup of tea to wash my lunch down with. I haven't seen these Soreen Lemon Mini Loaves before, so I guess they must be new out in the shops.

On opening, the loaf was just a little paler than usual and had a lemon fruity smell to it. On taste this Soreen Lemon Mini Loaf had a flavour of what may happen during a collision between two buffet trolleys on a train, with one carrying Lemon Drizzle Cake, and the other carrying fruit cake, but the sweet sugar topping on the lemon drizzle flew out of the nearest window.

However, I rather liked this loaf for its citrus zing, sticky centre and fruity goodness. These Soreen Lemon Mini Loaves will be a welcome regular to my lunchbox any day, with any of the other flavours of Soreen Mini Loaves.

Information on the packet; Each 30g loaf has 95 calories, with 0.6g of fat, 5.9g of sugar, and 0.16g. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaves (Ocado) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaves

I've long been a fan of Soreen Mini Loaves, I like to think I've tried most of their flavours. They are perfect for a lunchbox treat These new Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaves appeared recently in the Foodstufffinds cupboard. Their outer packet is very similar to another new limited flavour I finished without thinking a few days back. They were Soreen Raspberry and White Chocolate flavoured Mini Loaves. The packet was so similar to the Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaves that from a quick glance I thought I had two of the same and downed the first packet without writing up about them. I can say here that the Soreen Raspberry and White Chocolate flavoured Mini Loaves were very tasty indeed, with a sweet raspberry flavour and creamy chunks of white chocolate. As you can see, I liked them so much they didn't last very long at all.

Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaves

The photograph of the Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaf has a cute Gingerbread Man on the packet. I love ginger. I love ginger beer. I love ginger biscuits. I love ginger cake. I even love ginger tea. I find ginger always settles my stomach. It's the same as Long John Silver giving Jim Hawkins some ginger to settle his stomach on the long voyage in Treasure Island. That is my favourite book. I've read it quite a few times and always end up talking like a pirate throughout.

On opening the loaf's packet there was a gorgeous smell of ginger cake. I immediately regretted this just being a Christmas limited edition from Soreen. On taste this squidgy Soreen Gingerbread Mini Loaf tasted exquisite. It had a perfect texture of ginger cake in a mini loaf. I can't really say much more than that. Two mouthfuls and it was gone. Delightful. :-)

Information on the packet; At 98 calories per 30g loaf, they have 0.9g of fat, 6.7g of sugar, and 0.17g of salt. Please photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Berry & Beetroot Bakes (Gifted) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Berry & Beetroot Bakes

You may have seen in the past that I have written a few reviews about different flavours of Soreen. Soreen very kindly recently sent me two new flavours to write about. The first was Orange & Black Carrot flavour, and they were most enjoyable. I may have been avoiding this second new flavour a little… These Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Berry & Beetroot Bakes are the second new Mmms flavour of theirs. I do like berries and I also like beetroot, although I had a run in with beetroot juice a few years back that I'd prefer to forget.

Packed full of fruit and vegetables these mini Soreen Berry & Beetroot Bakes promise a lot of flavour. There is a plethora of fruit and vegetable juices mixed in with the ingredients. So much so that I can't tell what they might taste like without biting into one. So here it goes…

On opening the packet there was a pinkish red colour to the loaf. From the ingredients I was a little bit apprehensive about the flavour… if it tasted solely of beetroot I didn't think I'd be able to cope with it. Fortunately the loaf tastes predominantly of blackberries, with a hint of sweet pear after the initial blackberry flavour, and then there's a mild earthiness from the beetroot into the aftertaste.

I genuinely thought these Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Berry & Beetroot Bakes would not be very nice, simply because of the beetroot in the ingredients. However there is so much sweet blackberry fruitiness to begin with on biting into a loaf that I hardly noticed the beetroot at all, which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'd certainly have these again for a sweet healthy fruity and veggie snack after my lunch.

Information on the packet;
5 x bakes at 30g per loaf, each of which have 96 calories, 0.8g of fat, 5.8g of sugar and 0.2g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Orange & Rainbow Carrot Bakes #Gifted By @SpectreUK

Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Orange & Rainbow Carrot Bakes

I am a big fan of Soreen. I have been since I can remember. I used to eat it from the large loaves and cover them in butter, mainly because the flavour combination tastes so good. Soreen mini loaves have been around for quite a while now. I have a Soreen mini loaf every lunch time. They're quite low in calories, as I don't need butter with them anymore, and they're easy to eat in a rush whilst at work.

I've tasted Soreen's Blood Orange flavour in the past and liked it. I also like carrot cakes, although that might be related to the creamy topping! Having said that I do like the sound of these Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Orange & Rainbow Carrot Bakes. So it's about time I popped open a loaf to take a bite....

On opening a loaf's packet there was a tangy orange aroma to the light brown loaf inside. I noticed the texture of this Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms Orange & Rainbow Carrot Bake was slightly squidgier (if that's a word) than the regular Soreen loaf. On biting into the bake there was a tangy almost tart orange flavour to begin with, which mixed quickly with the rainbow carrot flavour. This is a very tasty combination and I'll certainly enjoy the two packets that Soreen very kindly sent me.

Information on the packet;
There are 5 x mini loaves at 96 calories per loaf, with 1.2g of fat, 4.8g of sugar, and 0.2g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen Vegan Chocolate & Orange flavour (Gifted) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Vegan Chocolate & Orange flavour

I have a mini loaf of Soreen everyday with my lunch. At generally just under 100 calories I always find them a perfect healthy tasty treat, as I munch on whatever fruit and eat my protein yoghurt that I have after my sandwich, crisps and the ubiquitous tomato. If I have a chocolate bar instead at the same amount of calories, I don't find it quite as filling. Besides there's always a little guilt that goes with chocolate. Although I have a much smaller stomach these days, so can't seem to fit an awful lot in there before I start to feel full.

I actually like all the flavours of Soreen mini loaves. The original flavour is probably my favourite, but I do really like the apple flavour and the strawberry flavour. I was pretty shocked when we had a delivery of the banana flavoured Soreen mini loaves as a replacement a while ago. I don't usually like anything flavoured with banana, as it can be such a strong flavour in most snacks and drinks. However, I even like the banana flavoured Soreen mini loaves.. "So can Soreen do anything badly?" You may be asking, we'll find out...

Easter is well on the way and Soreen have brought out these Chocolate & Orange flavoured mini loaves. Soreen very kindly sent me a packet of five mini loaves, and also all of their other flavours. So that'll keep me going on lunch snacks for a good long while. These Chocolate & Orange flavoured mini loaves are Vegan approved.

On opening the first Chocolate & Orange flavoured mini loaf there was a zingy Orange smell from the deep brown loaf. There are milk chocolate chips running through the loaf. The squidgy brown loaf had a predominantly orange malty flavour with the milk chocolate chips merging for a chocolate bonus towards the aftertaste. I found these Soreen Chocolate & Orange flavoured mini loaves delicious, and I'm rather chuffed with my lunchtime stash of all the other flavours of Soreen mini loaves too!

Information on the packet;
There are 5 mini loaves in a packet, with each 30g loaf at 106 calories, with 2.1g of fat, 6.5g of sugar, and 0.2g of salt. Please see ingredients in photograph.

Scream - Toffee Apple Soreen (Sainsburys) By @SpectreUK

It's the run up to Halloween and of course there's nothing that inspires blind terror more, enough in fact to make me Scream - as Toffee Apple Soreen. There's not just one of them in the packet, there's five individually wrapped critters after me. I blogged about Soreen Scream Chocolate & Blood Orange a few years ago. These terrifying Toffee Apple loafs help with the run up to Guy Fawkes Bonfire Night, where Toffee Apples are traditional wiped all over young and old peoples' faces whilst they try to eat them off a stick in front of a huge fire, whilst also not blowing themselves up with fireworks at the same time.

Blind terror aside I braved opening the first of the five Scream Toffee Apple Soreen loafs…. I suddenly heard a shrill terrible shriek outside the house. To be fair it was probably the hawk that keeps flying around and nabbing the odd pigeon and small bird. I saw it the other day take a little bird out of one of the bushes in the garden. The snatch and grab took all of three seconds and the hawk was away with its lunch. Terrible indeed, but also a natural fact of life… we all have to eat, and my treat right now is a Scream Toffee Apple Soreen. There was a sweet taste of apple on biting into the small brown loaf, with a complementary added toffee sweetness towards the back of the flavour. Not particularly scary, though it was very tasty indeed and I can't help looking forward to the other four loafs!

Information on the packet;
Each of the five 30g loafs have 98 calories, with 1.5g of fat, 6.4g of sugar, and 0.2g of salt. A good source of fibre, so please see the ingredients in the photograph below.

Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf (Asda) By @SpectreUK

Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf
Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf

My lifelong love for fruit loaf is no secret, ever since I had it in my lunchbox as a child. I used to have a couple of slices which were buttered and had slowly stuck together during the morning at school lunchtime. It was almost impossible to prize the two halves apart and one would always come away with all the butter on it, leaving the other slice forlorn.

Fruit loaf is full of flavour, super squidgy and goes great sliced with thick spread butter, and washed down with a good cup of tea. I've tried the amusing sliced version where some machine or person slices the whole fruit loaf in one go, packages it, and then over time in the packet the fruit loaf glues itself back together so the person who opens it has to re-slice it all over again.

This Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf has a mix of raisins, currants, zesty orange and lemon, cherries and mixed spice to warm us up in the winter months. It's very wet and windy at the moment, so I'm hoping this sliced and buttered for pudding will do the trick. I've been known to eat a whole fruit loaf on my own after a meal, but unfortunately I have to share this one.

On opening the packet the Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf looked much like a usual Soreen Fruit Loaf, but as you can see from the photograph, once cut into slices there was a lot more of the ingredients on show. Once butter had been spread liberally on each slice, the Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf tasted like a cross between a fruit loaf, a fruit cake and a Christmas fruit cake. The added cinnamon in the Fruit Loaf made it all that more Christmassy. This Soreen Winter Spice Festive Fruit Loaf was really tasty. There was plenty of fruitiness, plenty of zest from the orange and lemon peals, a good deal of spice, and I even didn't mind the cherries, which I usually don't like asides in fruit cakes! It certainly had a wintery and Christmassy feel to it.

Have a very Merry Christmas! ;-)

Information on the packet;

The 260g fruit loaf contains 155 calories per 52g portion, with 1.4g of fat, 12.6g of sugar, and 0.2g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Soreen: 4 Fruit Toast Me’s (Morrisons) By @Cinabar

My grammar isn’t great, but the name of this product had me thinking… is the apostrophe in the title okay? Can you put ’s on me when you really mean multiple? I’m sure some kind soul will message me to educate me, and for now I’ll just move on. As I’ve said I’ve never claimed to be an expert on such things.

So anyway we have these new “4 Fruit Toast Me’s” from Soreen and they look like small buns, made of good fruity Soreen. They are designed to be toasted, but before your can do this you first have to slice them. This is always fun with Soreen, a product that seems happy to glue its sticky self back together if you leave it alone for a minute. The buns are smaller than a slice of bread, and I could imagine they would be very difficult to fish out of a toaster without a lever to give a bit of extra reach. Our toaster does have a bit of lift, but even so it was difficult to remove the hot pieces. Don’t use metal cutlery to help get them out though, obvs.
They actually looked really good when they were out of the toaster, they were a mix between crispy and gooey, and the texture was fab. I buttered them and found them really enjoyable. All of the Soreen currents and raisin flavour was there, but having them hot made them a yummy winter snack. I also loved the new texture and felt that the toaster was a success, even if they were a bit tricky to cut and get out of the machine.

Soreen Scream Chocolate & Blood Orange (Morrisons) By @SpectreUK

Something scary was going on in my lunchbox today. I was almost frightened to death on opening my overly large Tupperware box. I’m sure I heard some distant thunder as the usual downpour of rain lashed the window nearby. These new Soreen Scream Chocolate and Blood Orange mini loaves are a spooky festive edition with a vampiric theme.

They are rammed full of chocolate chips running through the mini loaves and a fangtastic blood orange flavouring. On tearing open the packet with my specially sharpened teeth I found the chocolate chips went very well with the blood orange flavour. This left a chocolaty orange flavour in my mouth as an aftertaste. The first mini loaf went down very easily in a couple of tasty bites and was washed down with a good cup not-very-scary afternoon tea. There are five individually wrapped mini loaves in a pack for things that go bump in the middle of the day.

Information on the packet;

Each 30g bar has 104 calories, 2.4g of fat, 7.6g of sugar and 0.2g of salt. See photograph for ingredients.

Soreen Fruit Loaf - Orange (@SoreenHQ Sainsburys) [By @Cinabar]

We are fans of Soreen fruit loaf here at Foodstuff Finds, and quite often pick up a loaf as tasty sunday afternoon snack. I was pleased to see in Sainsbury’s a new flavour in a bright blue pack; Orange. I picked up the Soreen and in the shop a friendly member of staff noticed me and said that it was an excellent choice as the new flavour is rather good and a Sainsbury's exclusive. Maybe this was a random comment, or maybe my local Sainsbury’s are onto me and my Foodstuff Finds alert ego.
Once home we took the wrapper off and a lovely aroma of orange and spices filled the room. The loaf was fairly light in colour, but its texture was the usual soft, moist squishiness that you’d associate with Soreen. When you cut slices it always shrinks a bit! We sliced the loaf and added some butter, for full effect. The loaf is low in fat, but obviously adding too much full fat butter may negate this somewhat. ;-)
I was impressed with the flavour, although there was plenty of the usual sultanas and flavour, there was a sharp fresh burst of orange there too, rather like it had been made with a generous shot of fresh orange juice. I felt the acidic flavour worked rather well with the fruit loaf and its spices, and made this a nice new addition to the range, it is certainly one I’ll pick up again.

Soreen New Chocolate Mega Loaf (Available Morrisons) [By @cinabar]

Soreen is a firm favourite treat of mine and has been for years! They have had different editions of their fruit loaf in the past, from banana flavour to cereal bar format, but this really stood out as something exciting, Chocolate Mega Loaf!
Soreen asked me if I wanted to give it a try and very kindly sent a loaf over, the official packaging wasn’t quite ready so they also sent me over the photograph above too. The thing about this being a mega loaf is that it opens up a lot of possibilities, from cutting slices off and serving with custard through to having it with ice cream like a proper dessert. I do intend to give those a try but for the first test I went for the traditional neatly sliced and served with butter.
What impressed me the most was how well they incorporated the chocolate into the flavour. The expected flavour of dark fruit was still very much in the frame, but along with this came a rich chocolate flavour that worked well with it. The texture was still moist, soft and squidgy, the addition of the chocolate chips throughout gave it a bit of substance as these bits were more solid.
Slices of this with butter made a rich, chocolatey fruity delicious treat, and I thought it was a fab new product for the range, I can’t wait to try out a few other serving suggestions, and having it as a proper dessert too. For those wondering if the loaf does prove to big for you, it freezes too, if you need to put your treat on hold! :-D

Soreen - Two Buttered Slices (Sainsbury’s) [By @SpectreUK]

When I was a child (all those years ago…) my mom used to make my packed lunch for me for school. One of the items I usually found in my lunch box was two sliced and buttered pieces of Soreen malt loaf. As they were stuck together and wrapped in cling film, they were quite difficult to tear apart and eat separately. One malt loaf piece would generally steal most of the butter from the other slice. However I always enjoyed eating these two pieces, especially the more buttery slice. Nowadays I make my own pack lunch and usually have fig biscuits as my afternoon snack.

This new packet of two buttered slices of Soreen malt loaf is a great idea as an alternative to opening a whole malt loaf, slicing and eating it over a number of days, especially when it’s best to eat the malt loaf on the day of opening for freshness. The packet stated “The original malt loaf”, just in case non-believers out there thought that Soreen had changed the recipe. The malt loaf’s ingredients included; wheat flour, malted barley flour, dried whey (from cows’ milk), and raisins, amongst other things. At 208 calories, there was 6.7% butter on the slices, although how the old dinner lady with a knife and bucket of butter measured it out so exactly on each slice I’ll never know! Allergy advice on the packet stated that the slices contained gluten, barley, wheat and milk. The back of the packet recommended eating the buttered malt loaf with either cheese for savory, or jam or honey for a sweeter dessert. I have always preferred my buttered malt loaf straight for the full flavour, as it’s just so tasty without the need for adding any other bits and bobs to it.

On opening the packet, there was two fresh looking malt loaf slices stuck together. After carefully tearing the two pieces apart, I noticed the same old story replaying itself from all those (many, many… many) years ago, with the butter being mostly stolen by one piece of malt loaf. With the absence of a knife, I ate the piece with the least amount of butter on it first, leaving the buttery slice to last as a treat. Both malt loaf pieces had the usual Soreen healthy feeling fruity tasting goodness, and the butter added to the sweetness. I enjoyed eating both pieces, especially the one with the most butter on it. I reckon I’ll have one of these packets of two buttered slices of malt loaf in my lunch box to mix up my afternoon snacks from now on.

Soreen Banana Fruit Loaf (Waitrose)

Sorren Fruit Malt Loaf is a childhood favourite of mine. Finding a slice of buttered Malt Loaf in my lunch box as a kid was always a lovely treat. When I saw that there was a new edition on the shelves, I snapped up a pack.
As you would expect the loaf is lighter in colour than the regular Malt Loaf. There certainly are a lot less raisins and dark fruit, but the pieces of banana are clearly visible. Texture wise it is very similar to the regular loaf, which is soft, moist and sticky in consistency. It is quite difficult to cut as the whole item squishes as the knife enters, and you sort of have to gently pull it back to shape so that you are able to add butter.
The flavour is a little surprising. Banana is a strong taste; just ask any banana hater, they can usually spot the flavour of just once slice mixed in a full pint of fruit smoothie. This loaf on the other hand had plenty of visible banana, but the mildest of banana flavour. Really there was a just the gentlest hint the rest of the flavour was a sweet fruity taste, and it was difficult to specify the exact fruit. It was remarkably similar to the regular Malt Loaf, despite lacking the raisins. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed my slice, I just had been expecting a major banana taste explosion, and instead got a banana dud.
The flavour was so mild I’m still toying with feeding an unsuspecting Spectre (chief banana hater) a slice to see if he notices... I do have a bit of a wicked side!

Soreen Go (Asda)

Soreen Go
Soreen are the makers of fruit loaf or malt loaf or whatever the correct name for it is! Either name - I refer to the really nice fruit packed 'bread' that is heaven when buttered.
I found it strange that they had created a cereal bar, as they already sell a snack pack with two pre-buttered slices. (yummy!)
I was worried that I was being sold a chunk of malt loaf in new packaging, but the texture is a lot firmer. Despite the lack of butter this cereal bar is not at all dry. It is moist and packed with that wonderful raisin malted flavour. The cereal in it adds to the texture, makes it feel more like a proper bar, without ruining the taste. I was surprised by just how well it works.
