What The Fanta PURPLE Mystery Flavour 2023 #WhatTheFanta (Ocado) By @Cinabar

For the last few years, Fanta has released a mystery-flavour drink, usually in a bright colour without much of a clue as to what the taste may be. It plays on the fact that what you taste is influenced by what things look like, so if a drink is orange in colour, you sort of expect it to be citrus. However, having tried these drinks for a while, the moment I discovered the Fanta Mystery Flavour for 2023, I immediately ruled out blueberry and blackcurrant, the purple fruits. I know better.

I opened up the bottle, and the scent of the drink immediately jumped out at me, no questions, no hesitations this drink smells like strawberries and cream. There is a sweet, fruity strawberry aroma as well as a softer, more gentle, creamy vanilla aroma. I was pretty sure I’d nailed this.

I gave the Purple Fanta Mystery Flavour Drink a sip, and as much as the scent is strawberries and cream, the flavour is a little sharper, with strawberries, lemon, and sour cherries mixed in. That was much more the vibe of the flavour. The taste has less soft vanilla than the aroma, but it is still present. My final guess is still strawberries and cream, as I can’t quite put anything else together. Have you tried it? I would love to know your thoughts.

Movement Limited Edition Coca-Cola by Rosalia - Our Guesses!! (Tesco) by @cinabar

I have found another limited edition Coca-Cola, this one is called Movement and it is by Rosalia. The can is very funky and very pink, but I know better than to think the colour will influence the flavour. I poured the cola out into a glass, it was the usual colour, so no clues there. The aroma was very similar to that of Vanilla Coke. This might be easier than I thought.

I took a sip of the drink, and while it didn't taste exactly like Vanilla Coke, it was close. There was a background taste of something else too, something similar and annoyingly familiar that I couldn't quite pin down. I think there might have been coconut mixed in there, it is creamy and sweet and works nicely with the cola, but it wasn’t quite tropical.

If I had to pick a flavour for this Movement Limited Edition Coca Cola by Rosalia drink, I think I would settle on coconut macaroons as my guess. That would explain the creamy vanilla coconut flavour without being too heavy on the coconut milk side of things. Other guesses at Foodstuff Finds included cheesecake and the idea that there was something like berry or floral mixed in, so we weren’t sure ourselves on it. Have you tried it? What are your guesses? 

Dreamworld Limited Edition Coca Cola (WH Smith) By @Cinabar

I actually feel confident about this one. We have been trying quite a few items recently with mystery flavours and I find it really hard to guess them. Sure I can categorise them into fruity etc, but actually narrowing down the taste to a precise flavour is so difficult. The guess from the Cadbury Dairy Milk bars says it all really, not many repeated ideas in the comments at all.

Anyway this particular drink didn’t offer clues from the name, Dreamworld Limited Edition Coca Cola but the minute I poured it out I could already pick up a fruity finish from the aroma. When I gave it a sip my brain narrowed this down to tropical fruit, and further still I ended up with smooth sweet mango. I think there may have been a hint of papaya too, but the mango I am sure about. I love mango, I know the flavour well so I’m happy with this. It also worked surprisingly well with cola, but the fruit flavours often do. It had such a nice tropical edge I was savouring the rest of the can. It was a delight to drink and if they made them in multipack cans I’d be buying them up.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 02 (Tesco) By @Cinabar

After the wonderful guesses that have been coming in for Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 01 I felt it was about time to give the second offering from Cadbury a try. As with the first bar, this bar offered no clues to its flavour. The ingredients state “flavourings”. The bar has the standard pieces and the filling is a white fondant, so no clue from the colour either.

The only thing to do was to give a piece a try. The first bar I was convinced I recognised the flavour from somewhere, but for this one I wasn’t at all sure.

To start with, there is a sweetness, this feels slightly floral in the taste. There is a berry like fruitiness wrapped in there too, maybe cherry. Then what followed were some smoother aftertastes. I thought mild banana, but let's be honest, banana is never mild in sweets and chocolate, but it was a gentle taste. Finally, there was a creamy vanilla finish. Gosh, this is hard going to guess. I think processing the flavours of banana, vanilla and fruit sauce I came up with an answer, but I am in no way confident about it.

I think this Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 02 is: Banana Split.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 01 (Tesco) By @Cinabar

Who doesn’t love a mystery flavour of a product? There are a few around at the minute and I quite enjoy trying to guess, even if it is a bit of a novelty by the company. There are two bars from Cadbury at the minute. This one is Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 01.

I unwrapped the bar and at first was a little disappointed about, there was no clue from the design of the chocolate bar, it was just a very standard looking pieces. Inside was a white creme filling. Again no clue. There also wasn’t much of a scent either, so it was time to tuck in.

The flavour of the filling is sweet, and it is fruity. It was also annoyingly familiar and I couldn’t quite work out from where. To try and narrow down the fruit, I first thought berry, but the more I tasted it more the I’d guess cherry. There was something else there too, an almost nutty flavour in the background. Could it be Bakewell Tart? I think that is my best guess, but I don’t think it is my final guess. At some point, I’m going to eat something in the next month and I think it will then click. Have you tried Cadbury Dairy Milk Mystery Bar 01? What do you think?

What The Fanta 3 Mystery Flavour 2022 (Ocado) By @Cinabar

We have been getting an almost annual What The Fanta Mystery Flavour, and it always causes mild panic in me. This is because I feel like I should be better at guessing flavours than I am. I taste test so many foods and drinks, and curious combinations that I should be able to do this, but inevitably I struggle. I know I’m over thinking this, I’ll just open the bottle.

Firstly, this drink is bright pink, it has an epic colour, but I’m also aware this bottle of What The Fanta 3 Mystery Flavour may in no way be related to the pink colour. Fanta are probably messing with us. Next thing to note is this drink is made with artificial sweeteners, worth noting as I know it puts some people off.

I took a sip and let the flavour wash over me in the hope that inspiration would kick in. I think there are two tones in the drink. There is a mellow tone which reminds me of peach or melon and a sharper berry tone, possibly blueberry. The drink is also sweet, very sweet through and through. I liked it, but then I have a very sweet tooth. I thought it was a fruity, refreshing drink for summer. I would still welcome anyone else's guesses. I fear I may be nowhere near the mark!

Limited Edition Intergalactic Coca-Cola (Ocado) By @Cinabar

We have had some strange flavours of soft drinks over the years, and several we have had to guess. The latest limited edition from Coca-Cola is this new Intergalactic flavour. You do sort of have to guess what that means in terms of taste as it isn’t too easy to work it out from the name. I’m not sure it even inspires a vague hint of what it might taste like. So the question is what does Intergalactic mean in terms of a flavour, and I’ve got nothing.

I poured some Intergalactic Coca-Cola out into a glass and realised the drink had a fun red tinge to it. Was that a clue to the flavour? I gave it a sip and the first taste was sweet, I know cola is always sweet, but this was sweeter. Then there was a lot of creaminess, like vanilla. Finally, the flavour ends on a burnt sugar note, just like candy floss. I think the mystery flavour must be candy floss. That is my best guess. That flavour at the end of the sip is just so distinctively sweet and reminds me of the fair ground rather than space. Why is it red, why is it space themed? I don’t think I have the answer.

Mystery Brown Kit Kat from Japan (Amazon) By @Cinabar

Recently I bought a big box of mixed Japanese Kit Kats from Amazon. There are two of each flavour and a cute little menu to explain what the different varities are. Sometimes I go to it and do a lucky dip to choose a flavour and some (like dark chocolate) are not that crazy but some are super interesting. I picked out this one in a brown packet, found its partner and then looked for it on the menu, and it wasn’t there. Oh, this posed a problem. I have the Google translate app though so took a photo of the translation…. “oh tona sweet” I think something was literally lost in translation, I guess my tastebuds were on their own this time.

I opened up the Mystery Brown Kit Kat and it was a dark cream in colour with specks of dark brown so not really any clues there but it did smell like Matcha tea, even though it wasn’t the expected green. The packet for Matcha Kit Kat is also green so this isn’t the same. The flavour was sweet with hints of bitter that made me think of coffee, but the after taste was still like matcha tea. Curious, this bar has got me confused is there such a thing as Coffee Tea that would be my best guess!! This was nice, different and fun the have a guess at. If anyone knows what it actually is do please leave a comment below.

What The Fanta? (Asda) By @Cinabar

I had my last online order from Asda and discovered via an advert on their page that they have an exclusive drink from Fanta, called What The Fanta, so I ordered a couple of bottles. This is a mystery drink and there isn’t an explanation as to what the flavour is on the label. Apparently there is more than one mystery flavour too so I can only comment on this bottle. If my other bottle is different I’ll write a blog on that too.
The What The Fanta drink is bright green and it is also sugar free, so I poured it into a glass to have a taste test. This drink is definitely apple and something, the ‘and something’ part is very hard to nail down. I went from being sure it was apple and pear to now being sure it is apple and melon. The secondary flavour is juicy, sweet and refreshing and it certainly works. Ok, if I had to choose I would say apple, melon and pear! I think it is more likely to be one or the other but I seriously can’t decide.
This is a nice drink though, sweet and refreshing in the sunshine. The colour is a little bright for me, but taste wise I would love the big reveal and to know the flavour was staying. Can’t wait to find out what is in the other bottle!

Mystery Crisps (DegustaboxUK) By @SpectreUK

I'm not sure I should blog about these mystery crisps. They have no information on the packet asides the ingredients, so I can't give you a name or manufacturer or anything really. Therefore I apologise if this blog is a little short.

There's been no pressure on us to write about them either, just curiosity is slowly itching away at me. Like a Pandora's Box. I'm just staring at the packet and wondering. The ingredients don't even look that interesting. They sound pretty healthy, but no chilli heat or even pepper. Just corn, lentils, beans and peas. My curiosity may have got the better of me here, as I really don't like snacks that don't taste of anything. It's supposed to be tasty at least… that's why it's a snack!

I can see through the packet and these tortilla shaped crisps look a little sat on and crushed… On opening the packet the rather strong smell of corn oil hit my nostrils, there was a little pea and bean in the aroma also, but mostly oil. They aren't crunchy at all. Perhaps a little rubbery in texture. They taste mainly of corn with a heavy hint of oil… I have to admit that I ate one crisp and then threw the bag away. I'm not wasting (or waisting) the calories. Whoever made them and whatever they are supposed to be, these mystery crisps need a serious rethink!

Information on the packet;
Per 100g there are 424 calories, with 11.8g of fat, 0.4g of sugar, and 1g of salt. Ingredients include; corn, red lentils, green peas, yellow peas, black beans, corn oil, and salt.

Walkers – What’s That Flavour? Mystery Flavour C [Crisps] [By @Cinabar]

Following on from yesterday, I thought I’d give the very last Walkers ‘mystery flavour’ from Walkers a try. Just as a quick summary, the packets aren’t labelled with a variety instead you have to guess what it is and there is a competition on the Walkers homepage where you can enter if you are correct.
The only clue on the bag to Mystery Flavour C’s variety is that it is spicy. This becomes apparent when you open the packet and the rich scent of curry powder fills your nostrils. The crisps themselves don’t taste overly meaty, but do contain some rich curry tones, and a nice hint of something like a tomato base. The heat isn’t too bad, so the curry has to be one of the more easy going varieties, and as such I think we can rule out vindaloo. I guess the obvious guess would be chicken tikka masala, but I have to confess to not knowing my curries that well.
There was a part of me that felt the milder spice might mean that it was something more Thai in nature, but I wasn’t sure I could pick up on any of the coconut or lemongrass key tastes. I’m normally quite good at spotting lemongrass, as it’s not a favourite taste of mine so it always is quite noticeable and it is a favourite in Thai cooking (sadly). Its lack of appearance was a bonus, for me anyway! Perhaps it is a good Korma curry, but it does have a sort of crisp taste at the end, which is perhaps a vegetable base. This crisp tasting business isn’t as easy as you might think!
Anyway these were good spicy crisps, and I think they could really work when they get launched properly. I do like curry flavour crisps, and whatever the specifics of Mystery Flavour C they get the thumbs up from me.

Walkers – What’s That Flavour? Mystery Flavour B [Crisps] [By @Cinabar]

This is the second flavour in the new Walkers range of mystery varieties which have launched with a big competition on the bags. I discussed the first one here, but there are three new packs out, and you can guess what flavours they are on the walkers site and try and win some money! As per the first pack (know as flavour A) this one doesn’t have much of a clue to the taste except a vague ‘meaty’ comment on the back. I should point out that the image on the bag shows inspirational ingredients and is not actually a clue to the contents (boo hiss).
I opened the pack up and the aroma was surprisingly sweet, more so than I had expected. The sweet tones dulled a little when I tried a crisp, and the meatiness promised on the back of the pack kicked in. I didn’t think it was as rich as beef, or as light as chicken, so I ended up concluding that it must be pork. The sweetness seems to turn into more of a tomato flavour mixed in, so as a conclusion I was thinking around a meat feast pizza or more simply sausage and red sauce. Either way I liked the crisps, but still feel that I haven’t quite hit the mark with the solution. There were some background hints of another flavour, and although it was just gentle, it was enough to make me think I’d missed something. Another friend who had tried them felt that it might be Spam, but as I’ve never tried the stuff I can’t really comment on that one, sadly.
Identifying these flavours is so much harder than you might think but I am enjoying trying! I’m off for another bag of Mystery Flavour B and going to have a bit more of a think. Anyone else got any ideas? Good luck with your guesses! :-)

Walkers – What’s That Flavour? Mystery Flavour A [Crisps] [By @Cinabar]

The new products just keep on rolling in... and I’m pleased to announce some new crisps from Walkers. I can’t tell you what flavours they are though – because it’s all part of the mystery!
Walkers have created three new varieties of crisps, but not labelled what they are on the bag. You can take a guess at the flavours (via Facebook or Text message) and then be in with the chance to win some serious cash prizes!
I can’t resist a challenge, so was eager to dive in. I started with the reasonably named bag ‘A’. The only clue on the packet was that this was a dairy based flavour. The ingredients list on the back didn’t offer any more clues than that!
I opened up the bag and was pretty sure I could pick up on a garlic smell and some cheese. When I actually tasted a crisp, I could no longer pick up on that garlic hint and the flavour seemed far more focussed on the cheese aspect. It was a strong cheese, something quite powerful and distinct, and perhaps that garlic I thought I smelt was a background onion taste, possible even shallots?
The main thing is that these crisps were really nice, and if you like Walkers Cheese and Onion then you’ll find these a good alternative. They are certainly similar to that classic taste, but still are unique and they have stumped me a bit. I’ll be honest I not sure what I’m going to enter as a potential answer, and I’m going to have to have another bag to give them a try before I settle on a final decision.

Revels (Sainsbury's)

I have heard a lot about the new Revel, and the eviction of the most unpopular flavour, but I have only just found the new packets. There was an online poll to decide on the worst Revel, and I was sure that it would be raisin or toffee. (Surely?) Instead we are saying goodbye to coffee, my favourite. But, before I start on the petition to reinstate coffee, the letter to MPs etc. I feel it my duty to at least try the replacement.
I honestly can't decide whether or not to reveal what the new flavour is. There are places on the internet where it has been mentioned, but the company certainly want to keep it a secret, and it is kind of fun not knowing. So, all I shall say is that it is nice enough but perhaps a little artificial tasting. And... bring back coffee already!!!!!
