Lemon Meringue Fudge (Fudge Town) By @Cinabar

Lemon Meringue Fudge (Fudge Town)

We are lucky to attend a lot of events and comic cons thanks to my other half’s business, and there are certain traders we always look out for. Fudge Town is one we regularly see at northern events, and I always enjoy browsing their range of fun and inventive flavours, from Irn Bru to Oreo.

They are long days at these events, so I like to pick up a bar of fudge as a little treat for afterwards. On this occasion, I went for Lemon Meringue.

The bar has a rich yellow colour, with visible pieces of meringue running through it. From the first bite, there is a lovely citrus burst that really stands out. The lemon flavour is zingy but still sweet, giving it a fresh and moreish quality. The meringue pieces add an extra layer of sweetness, and together it makes for a really well balanced and enjoyable treat.

Fudge Town never disappoints, and I am already looking forward to trying whatever flavour catches my eye next. Hopefully I will see them again soon.

If you are heading to a comic con in the north, they are well worth seeking out. If not, they also sell online.

Creme Egg Fudge (Fudge Town) By @Cinabar

Creme Egg Fudge (Fudge Town)

We go to a lot of Comic Cons with work, and I try not to spend too much, but I am easily distracted by the sweet stands. One thing I can’t resist is unusual flavours, and the lovely people at the Fudge Town stand never disappoint. I wandered over to their stall and really couldn’t choose between Creme Egg and Oreo, but I ended up settling on this one and a bar of Battenberg for the stall holder who was behind us.

This bar is based on the Creme Egg and has a cute pattern with chocolate fudge sandwiching a creme fondant fudge filling. It did look pretty. The bars are quite hefty, so I cut myself a chunk and gave it a try. The fudge has a lovely texture, firm but soft. The flavour is firstly chocolate, followed by that distinctive sweet, sugary Creme Egg fondant taste. It was absolutely spot on and worked really well. Sure, the flavours are novel, but they are made really well and match exactly what they are supposed to taste like.

The stall holder who had the Battenberg let me try some, and that was yummy too, even down to having the squares in the pattern. I’ve made a mental note to treat myself next time I see the Fudge Town stall and to make sure I get that Oreo one.

Choccy Hot Cross Bun Bites (M&S) By @Cinabar

Choccy Hot Cross Bun Bites (M&S)

Today is Good Friday and a bank holiday (public holiday) in the UK, so we have a long weekend for the Easter break. Apparently I’m not allowed to open any chocolate eggs until Sunday, just so you know what kind of mean environment I’m in. Until then, I needed to find something seasonal but sweet that I could munch on.

We recently popped into M&S as I had some birthday vouchers to spend, and along with a nice new top, I got us a few treats from the food hall. I picked up this bag of Choccy Hot Cross Bun Bites and thought today seemed like the perfect day to give them a try.

In the bag, the chocolates are a little plain-looking. I was hoping they would be round like a hot cross bun and have an iced or decorated cross, but there are just small rectangles. The taste was good, though; the milk chocolate coating was a decent thickness; the filling was sweet, buttery, and sugary; and it had a really good blast of spice. The flavour was stronger than I thought it would be; there was quite a punch of nutmeg and ginger, which was lovely. There were also raisins dotted around, giving it a nice bit of texture and sweetness. The flavour was good of these Choccy Hot Cross Bun Bites, but I do think they were missing a treat by decorating them with a cross.

Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge (Waitrose) By @SpectreUK

Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge (Waitrose)

Happy New Year!

While lots of people out there will be on health kicks, I'm slowly getting over a particularly vicious couple of weeks of flu. So, I fancy a sweet treat tonight. Cinabar bought me this box of Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge from Waitrose just before I caught the flu off her, and was ill all of the festive season. We also had a box of this Festive Figgy Fudge in a hamper for a Christmas present, which I quickly nabbed while no one was looking, so I'm hoping I like it. I do like fig biscuits, and I love fudge. What can go wrong? Well, apart from catching the flu off Cinabar. Did I already mention that?

Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge (Waitrose)

This Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge was made with raisins, fig purée, and mixed spices. I hope they left enough room for the fudge. On opening the packet there was a spicy fruity sweet aroma and a little fudge. It smelt like Christmas Pudding with a touch of fudge. I thought about breaking open another tub of Brandy Cream. On taste, oh my, it tastes really good. It tastes like a waiter carrying a tray of Christmas Puddings crashed into a waitress carrying a fudge cake and they found a room. Oh, yes, this Christmas Festive Figgy Fudge is one to definitely pick up before it disappears off the shelves.

Information on the packet; The 130g packet contained 436 calories per 100g, with 12.8g of fat, 66.8g of sugar, 0.10g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Salted Caramel Fudge Poppets (WH Smiths) By @Cinabar

Salted Caramel Fudge Poppets

I needed chocolate after a long commute. It was one of those days where my walk to the train station was greeted by torrential rain, and even with a raincoat, I arrived rain soaked. Then there was the points failure at the station, joy. So I got to my home station, wandered into the shop, and picked up a bag of Poppets and some Revels, they were two for £5. When did grab bags get so pricey?

After I had dried off at home, I opened up the Salted Caramel Fudge Poppets and gave them a try. The texture is that of a firm fudge. The flavour, well, they are sweet! They seem sweeter than regular fudge and have a lovely, strong hit of caramel, sweetness, and salt. The first one felt a bit overpowering with the flavours, but the more I tried, the more delicious they became. I was pretty hooked, and I finished half the bag warming up with a hot drink. These Salted Caramel Fudge Poppets were the perfect soothing treat after a long day. It's been too long since I last had Poppets.

Quaker Caramel Fudge Porridge (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Quaker Caramel Fudge Porridge

I don’t eat porridge very often, so I rarely buy a whole box, unless I’m using it for baking, of course. I just had a fancy for some chocolatey porridge and spotted this Quaker Caramel Fudge Porridge online and added it to my basket. The porridge is made in the container, you open the lid, add hot water, leave it for a few minutes, then stir and eat. Super simple.

The flavour caught my eye as it is caramel fudge, and the moment the hot water hit the oats, it smelled lovely. There were sweet toffee and chocolate tones, and I couldn't’ wait to give it a try. The taste test was also really positive, provided, of course, you have a sweet tooth. If you don't, I’m not sure you would buy a flavour like this anyway. The porridge mixed up nicely and even had fudge pieces in it, which was a nice touch. The chocolate was good, and all the caramel-like tastes came through. This isn’t an every-day porridge but does make a nice treat at the weekend as something a bit more indulgent.

Handmade British Fudge Selection (Fudge Kitchen) By @cinabar

Handmade British Fudge Selection (Fudge Kitchen)

This cute box of fudge was a birthday gift, and it looked really interesting. I do love fudge and enjoy buying a slice at those artisan food fairs or posh tourist shops by the sea. This, however, is a selection of those sorts of fudge in a box, packaged up like a box of chocolates would be. The pieces are quite big and chunky too, I thought that there might be two layers, but it is just one layer of super thick pieces. Awesome.

I had a look in the box and on the back of the packet, and there was no menu, which was really disappointing. I don’t know if it was just missing in my box but to try them without is such a shame. There is a list on the back with the varieties, just noway of knowing which is which, how do you tell clotted cream from the caramel one just by looking? I was also super keen to try the peanut butter one which involved sniffing the chocolates! It was divine though. None of us could work which one the chilli one was, and my mum ending up taste testing that one, not sure she would have picked it, it made her eyes water! The fudges were absolutely lovely, but yes, it did need a menu.
