I do like trying new cheeses, but have to admit to being a little nervous when it comes to the ones speckled with chilli. I like the idea, but never quite pick up a pack! When Mexicana got in touch and asked if I wanted to try their cheeses, my curiosity grew when I realised that one of the ones they make is a Sweet Chilli edition. This sounded far more up my street, so I opted to give it a try.
We chose to have this with a lunch of crackers, and cold meats, it seemed to fit in perfectly with that. The cheese has a fair bit of colour too it, and lots of that looks like it comes from the chilli content which worried me a little. I carefully placed one of the pieces onto a buttered cracker and tentatively gave it a taste. First things first the chilli was totally manageable, it just had a lovely warm tingle that enhanced the cheese flavour. The cheddar was crumbly but its taste was strong and held its own, and the two flavours mixed perfectly, with just a hint of sweetness in there too. It was rather like having a chunk of cheddar with a bit of sweet chilli pickle on the side.
I happily munched my way through my portion, and thoroughly enjoyed the cheese. I’ve made a mental note to try it grilled on toast, as I can imagine that works like a dream.
I have to say I am a little bit excited about chilli cheese and found myself really enjoying it. I am going to try the regular heat Mexicana cheese next, and see how my taste buds get on with that! For those of you that are brave enough there is a Mexicana EXtra Hot cheese too, if you do try it let me know how you get on!
