Terry’s Chocolate Caramel (Tesco) By @Cinabar

It’s very hard to say the words Terry’s Chocolate without automatically adding Orange afterwards. Terry’s Chocolate Orange is such a classic, and it’s been around for ages. There have been a few different versions over the years, like ones with popping candy, but this is the first time I’ve seen Terry’s Chocolate Caramel.

It’s still orange-shaped, but the wrapper inside the box is cream rather than orange, which does make it stand out. It opens the same way too, a gentle tap on the table, then unwrap it and the slices neatly spread out (and yes, I still want to call it an Orange).

The first thing I noticed was the smell, a rich, slightly burnt caramel aroma. I tried a slice, and honestly, it didn’t grab me straight away. The flavour isn’t as sweet as I expected. After a second piece, though, I started to enjoy the more grown-up caramel flavour, and by the third I was completely hooked. It just took a moment to get used to it.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Egg (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Most Terry’s Chocolate Orange products are, unsurprisingly, orange-flavoured chocolate. That is their thing. Their main product, of course, is the classic Terry’s Chocolate Orange. I have enjoyed the bars and miniature chocolates over the years, but this is the first time I can recall seeing an Easter egg.

I have to admit, the foil was folded so tightly that I couldn’t read the description properly. I assumed it was just two solid pieces of milk chocolate flavoured with orange. However, when I unwrapped the egg, the chocolate looked great, even featuring the Terry’s logo embossed on it. I took a bite and discovered something even better. It was filled with orange crème. This egg is essentially a giant Chocolate Orange Cream chocolate.

The filling was sweet, fruity, and an absolute delight, while the chocolate shell was thick and tasty. I absolutely loved it. This has to be a new classic for Terry’s. I have no idea why they haven’t done this before, but I will definitely be buying more before Easter is over.

Terry’s Chocolate Mint Minis (Tesco) By @Cinabar

After trying Lindt Lindor Dark Mint, I’d almost convinced myself that the only chocolate mint for me was After Eights. But I know there are plenty of other great chocolate mint combinations out there, so I decided to see if anything new had popped up. It is Christmas, after all, and mint, like cinnamon, feels like a flavour of the season.

This year, Terry’s has stepped away from their iconic oranges to release their Mint Chocolate range, and I must say, I’m a fan. Alongside it, they’ve introduced these Terry’s Chocolate Mint Minis, which looked irresistibly cute on the shelf, so naturally, I picked up a bag.

The packaging is pretty and festive, but my first impressions weren’t entirely positive. The “peel here” tab on the back turned out to be more of a “rip it here awkwardly and hope for the best” situation. To make matters worse, the bag isn’t resealable, which feels like an oversight. The chocolates themselves had rubbed together inside the bag, so they lacked the polished, glossy finish you get with the full-sized version. A little disappointing.

However, once I got past the packaging quirks, I was pleasantly surprised. These bite-sized chocolates are adorable, and the flavour is absolutely spot on. The milk chocolate is creamy and sweet, and the mint shines through beautifully. The crunchy texture from the mint crystals mixed into the chocolate adds a satisfying bite. Taste-wise, they’re a complete win.

That said, I’m not entirely sold on the value of miniaturisation in this case. While the smaller size is undeniably cute, I’m not sure it offers much beyond aesthetics compared to the full-sized Terry’s (not an) Orange.

Terry’s Chocolate Milk... (Not Orange) (Morrisons) By @Cinabar

Nothing sounds more enticing than the slogan on the side of the box of this new product from Terry’s: “Milk Chocolate Flavoured Chocolate." Thats how I always like my milk chocolate, milk chocolate flavoured. Here we have the Terry’s Milk Chocolate... And that is where the name ends; the next most obvious word would be ‘orange’ but there is no orange, so the name sort of hangs. Terry’s Chocolate Milk Ball? 

This is like a chocolate orange, in that it is the same shape and has the same segments but significantly is just milk chocolate. We don’t know why. All the exciting editions they could have gone with, and they chose flavourless.Sorry, I meant milk chocolate flavoured milk chocolate. I opened up the pack; the Terry’s Chocolate Milk item (?) was in a blue wrapper. I tapped it and unwrapped it. The segments looked like pieces of chocolate orange (they had the same markings), but the flavour was just milk chocolate. It was nice too; the chocolate was good. It was sweet and creamy, with a nice cocoa taste. It was a good solid chocolate, but I just was left thinking I’m just not sure it is something I’d buy again. It turns out that I like my Terry’s chocolate flavoured, but I totally appreciate there will be fans for this. 

Terry’s Chocolate (Not Orange) Mint (Ocado) By @Cinabar

I know the weather isn’t great, but I just don’t think psychologically I’m ready to skip straight to Christmas. Everyone knows we get new Terry’s Chocolate Orange editions at Christmas, yet here we are in July with this Terry’s Chocolate Mint (ok, it doesn’t actually say orange, but it is the same shape). 

As I have experience with Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, I know to tap the ball of chocolate before unwrapping it, as this loosens the segments, so that is what I did. Once unwrapped, all the pieces fell apart nicely for sharing. As this is a mint chocolate, I assumed it would be made with dark chocolate, but once the wrapper was off, I spotted that it was made with milk chocolate.

I took a piece of Terry’s Chocolate Mint and gave it a try. There is some serious mint in this chocolate, and it was an absolute blast of peppermint chocolate goodness. I love mint; I’m really glad the flavour is strong, and as you chew, all the sweet, creamy tones of chocolate shine through. This is a delight to eat. I meant to stop after only four pieces, but you know it is a bit good. 

I don’t know why we have a new flavour in the summer, but I am rather pleased with how yummy this Terry’s Chocolate Orange is. You could always add a piece to a bowl of mint chocolate-chip ice cream as the perfect summer topping, or just eat it straight from the wrapper like I did. 

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Minis Exploding Candy (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Popping candy has a Marmite-like property; some may hate it for its childish nature, and some absolutely love the popping tingle. Whenever I see popping candy, it takes me back to my childhood and those little sachets you used to get in newsagents full of the stuff with fruity flavours.

A few years back, Terry’s brought out a popping candy edition in full size orange, which I haven’t seen for some time. These seem to be the next step in the evolution, and here we have a sharing bag of Terry’s Chocolate Orange Minis Exploding Candy. I can’t wait.

Firstly, the bag has one of those stickers for re-sealing, which I find useful and a reminder not to eat the entire bag in one session. Inside the pack are really cute mini Terry’s Chocolate Orange segments. They do look super sweet; each one has the logo on it. I gave one a try, and the chocolate was lovely, sweet, and smooth, and then there was a tingle and the exploding candy pops. It was a good, fun sensation, and it popped and crackled, and I really liked it. Terry’s chocolate is lovely and sweet, and the orange flavour is a good strength. The whole thing is a delight. I just have to remember that I don’t have to eat them all in one setting because the packet does re-seal! 

Terry’s Chocolate Mint (Tesco) By @cinabar

Terry’s has done other flavours over the years for Chocolate Oranges, but mostly they are still orange-flavoured, i.e., white chocolate and orange or orange and popping candy. I do remember a mint one from a few years back, but it was definitely with dark chocolate and this mint and milk chocolate. I love chocolate mint, so I was really pleased to see this new edition on the shelves.

 

I opened up the pack and found a green foiled ball of chocolate. I tapped it, which should release all the pieces, and unwrapped it. A couple fell loose, and the rest were happily stuck! So I gave it a bit of encouragement and managed to rescue a few to try.

This works really well, and I was impressed that the mint flavour was as strong as it was. It was very cool and refreshing and a little sharp, but it was mellowed by the silky, thick sweet milk chocolate. Oh my, this is moreish stuff. I loved that the mint flavour was full-on; it was almost like the blast from an After Eight. Each piece had such a creamy chocolate aftertaste too; I am hooked. I’d be more than happy to get one of these as a stocking filler, and it is certainly something I’ll buy again to share, at least when I can work out how to separate the pieces a bit better.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Mini Eggs White (Tesco) By @SpectreUK

I haven't had Terry's Chocolate Orange for a while, and I certainly haven't tried these Terry's Chocolate Orange Mini Eggs White before. Obviously brought out to celebrate the chocolate egg season, or Easter as some people call it, these white chocolate and orange eggs should go down a treat.

The back of the packet stated that these Terry's Chocolate Orange Mini Eggs White had a crispy orange coloured egg shaped shell, with a white chocolate centre flavoured with orange oil. They sounded ideal for a quick snack or pudding with a tub of low calorie ice cream.

You can see the almost fluorescent orange eggs in the photograph. There was a strong smell of orange oil from the bright shiny eggs. They had quite a crunch to get into their creamy white chocolate insides. They were very tasty indeed, mainly of orange oil though, well mostly of orange oil, well I'd maybe go as far as to say that they were predominantly tasting of orange oil, and then with a little creamy white chocolate at the back of the flavour. Having said that, I'd still have them again though.

Information on the packet; The 80g packet contained 120 calories per 6 eggs at 22.8g, with 6.3g of fat, 14g of sugar and 0.07g of salt. Please see photograph for the ingredients.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Easter Edition With Crushed Shells (Iceland) By @cinabar

This is not a regular Chocolate Orange, this is an Easter edition chocolate orange. Apparently. I think many of us will associate Terry’s Chocolate Orange as a Christmas treat; it is something you normally find given as a stocking filler. I love them, but I have to admit it has been a while since I last had one.

Terry’s are branching out and have released an Easter edition. I imagine there was a brief discussion about how the complexities of making a sliced egg shape were just too much trouble, and the idea of adding mini eggs to the chocolate was dismissed as well, and we ended up with Terry's Chocolate Orange Easter Edition With Crushed Shells.

I "tapped and unwrapped" the orange, and the pieces fell away neatly. The first thing I noted was that there wasn’t much shell to be seen. It was there, but you had to really look for it. I tried the chocolate, and the woosh of rich, sweet chocolate and orange filled my palate. I thought of Christmas. This is a lovely, sweet, fruity chocolate. The crushed shells do add a bit of texture, and there is a nice crispiness when you bite in. I don’t think Terry’s Chocolate Orange Easter Edition With Crushed Shells is that much effort in terms of a new Easter flavour but I was really pleased that it made me buy a Chocolate Orange again.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Cranberry Bar (Asda) By @Cinabar

This is the year of chocolate orange, if you are an orange fan there have been many products around. If you are Terry’s the indisputable king of the Chocolate Orange, then what do you do. Obviously focus on your key product, then bring out your key product in the form of a bar, and then, for Christmas fun add another fruit too. They may as well enjoy the year. It has been a rough ride, but they have still given us; Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Cranberry Bar. Awesome! I like the idea of the seasonal twist.

Terry’s haven’t done many limited editions, usually it is a white version or a dark chocolate version but a new flavour in a different format caught my attention so I was keen to try this. The bar itself is smart looking, and looks like little segments of orange stacked on each other. The milk chocolate had plenty of orange and the twist of the cranberry added a sourness and texture both of which I loved. This combination really worked, I hope they bring it out in future years too.

Terry’s White Chocolate Orange (Co-op) By @SpectreUK

I must admit I haven't had a Terry's Chocolate Orange for quite sometime. I used to get them quite often as a stocking filler for Christmas, and more rarer for Birthdays. Nowadays I seem to receive After Eights and or fudge. I do rather like fudge, and after dinner mints can be great after a spicy meal.

I eat chocolate and biscuits for puddings most nights instead of snacking on chocolate during the day. My favourite pudding is white chocolate, probably as I used to have it all the time when I was a child, and I promised myself when I was twelve that I'd never really grow up. My ultimate favourite is a white chocolate bar washed down with a white hot chocolate drink. Now that's luxury for me right there. This new Terry's White Chocolate Orange ticks a lot of boxes for me, and I see that's why I've been bought one when it's nowhere near my Birthday or of course Christmas. I know I haven't tasted it yet, but I am very excited about trying it with a white hot chocolate drink first, and perhaps some ice cream on another day.

On opening the box I thumped the wrapped white chocolate orange on the table to release some of the segments before unwrapping. As you can see from the photograph the white chocolate orange fell apart into segments quite easily. With my white hot chocolate ready by my side and the end of a spy thriller I've been watching over the passed few days paused for my first taste, I was ready to go. By the way I have the attention span of a gnat. I usually read four books at a time flitting between them and I also watch a few minutes of something every day until it inevitably ends. I actually find it's a good test for my memory trying to keep track of everything. It's also probably why I'm a project manager and prefer to be working on quite a few things at the same time in my work life… when I get back to it…

On first taste this Terry's White Chocolate Orange is lusciously creamy. The velvety vanilla from the chocolate pampered my tastebuds as the orange oil gave it that little extra zing. I at first hadn't been sure that orange flavour would go well with white chocolate. Then I remembered that I've recently taken to dropping fruit such as grapes, strawberries and orange segments into my protein yoghurt at lunchtime. I figured that it may possibly taste pretty much the same as orange and vanilla yoghurt. The Terry's White Chocolate Orange is a little more subtle in orange flavour, as there is Orange Oil in the ingredients, and the creaminess from the white chocolate coupled with the extra creaminess from my white hot chocolate drink was like an orange ride through dreamland (stifles a corny giggle). Mmm… I'll try the next round of Terry's White Chocolate Orange segments with vanilla ice-cream. This is definitely a treat for all year round, and not just for Christmas!

Information on the box; The 147g chocolate orange contains 162 calories per 4 segments, with 9.1g of fat, 18g of sugar, and 0.07g of salt. Ingredients include; sugar, cocoa butter, whole milk powder, emulsifier (soya lecithins), natural vanilla flavourings, and orange oil.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange – Milk Toffee Crunch (Waitrose) [By @Cinabar]

So the cold weather is putting in an appearance, and the supermarkets seemed to have gained a seasonal isle which consists of both Halloween and Christmas goodies. This can mean only one thing; the range of Terry’s Chocolate Oranges has suddenly increased too! I’m pretty sure this variety is a re-release from a Limited Edition bar from few years ago, but as it isn’t a flavour I’ve tried before I could resist picking it up.
The packaging isn’t particularly Christmas themed, but it does feel more traditional that other variants. The chocolate orange within the wrapper looks just like the regular milk chocolate one, with no obvious clue to the hidden toffee within. Each piece looks quite smooth.
The flavour was impressive, the addition of the toffee works really well with the milk chocolate and the orange. It creates a sweet well balanced taste that seems to combine all the ingredients nicely. The toffee taste feels a bit like a black treacle toffee, it’s a rich flavour, and its satisfyingly dark. The smooth creamy milk chocolate and the zesty orange set it off wonderfully.
Although you can’t see the toffee bits, they do add well to the texture, and give each piece a lovely crunch. It’s not sticky at all, but you just get nice bits of crispy texture mixed into the orange.
As a chocolate orange fan this won’t be my only purchase of this flavour, but I have to confess to hoping that there are some other new ones coming out for the Christmas period too. In previous years varieties like the popping candy one have been really innovative.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Honeycomb Crunch (Sainsbury’s) [By @Cinabar]

I know the weather might well be having a hot spell, but the shops have converted to winter clothes and Christmas ranges in the food shops. I spotted an unthinkable number of mince pies in the supermarket, and in the Christmas isle (there really is a Christmas isle already) this new Chocolate Orange has appeared. Next to it sat the popping candy version from previous years, but I couldn’t see the Smasher from last year.
This new version of the Terry’s Chocolate Orange has pieces of ‘Honeycomb Crunch’ hidden within its chocolate. The Honeycomb Crunch refers to cinder toffee pieces (like the centre of a Crunchie bar) broken up within the orange.
I unwrapped the orange, tapped it (i.e. whacked it) and unwrapped, as per tradition. Once unwrapped the chocolate orange segments fell open revealing the chocolate wedges. The chocolate smelt strongly of orange, and as a whole didn’t look noticeably different to the regular milk chocolate version of the product. The taste was also the usual citrus hit, with loads of sweet orange flavour, and mellow sweet milk chocolate tones. The addition of the ‘honeycomb’ gave the chocolate a noticeable crunch, but sadly not that much flavour. There was a hint of the sweet honey taste from the cinder toffee, but the orange was so strong that you really had to look for it. To be honest I like the orange taste, it is the whole point of a Terry’s Chocolate Orange, so I’m not sure what else you can do with the addition of the cinder toffee to make it any stronger, except add more bits and that would be overly crunchy! It’s not an easy one to balance, but the texture is good and the extra sweetness is just a little mild.
I liked the chocolate, it delivered a nice hit of orange and crunch but it’s just not that different from other varieties currently available. My current favourite Chocolate Orange still has to be the Volcanic Popping Candy edition which really has the fun factor, and I’m very pleased to see it back.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange: White Chocolate Smasher [Tutti Frutti Edition] (Sainsbury's)

Another Christmas is approaching and this means that someone over at Terry’s has put together a Limited Edition Chocolate Orange for the Season. Last year we had Volcanic Popping Candy, which was obviously a success as it is back on the shelves this year, but in previous years we have had some less appealing flavours, such as Orange and Hazelnut which was a little confused for my taste buds.
This year’s special is Tutti Frutti, and it consists of fruit flavoured colourful crystals in a white chocolate orange (which reminds me I haven’t seen the Snowball this year either).
The white chocolate is very sweet and creamy, and the wonderfully strong orange shines through. The Tutti Frutti bits add a light crunch in each piece, and also add to the sweetness, as well as giving a hint of a mixed fruits flavour. The Tutti Frutti taste isn’t as developed as I had expected, but it was certainly present and nicely put together.
I think it would be hard to dislike this chocolate orange, it has a good appeal with its speckled colourful chocolate chunks and sweet flavour. However it is quite a rich sweet Chocolate Orange, so less is more, and I found a couple of pieces plenty to relieve my sugar craving.

Terry’s [Smooth & Creamy] Milk Chocolate (99p Store)

Terry’s used to be a big brand of chocolate manufacturers here in the UK, but alas its stock seems to have reduced over the years and now comprise mainly of the Chocolate Orange range and the All Gold boxes. The reduction of items seems to have followed the closure of the site in York which occurred after the Kraft takeover. It was quite a surprise when one reader DavidH said that he had found a bar of regular milk chocolate from this company as this isn’t a readily available product, and then he very kindly sent me some too for me to try.
The chocolate is in a big bar, with lovely sweet aromas. The chocolate breaks easily, and isn’t overly brittle. It melts nicely on the tongue and seems to remain quite thick on the palette. There are nice rich flavours from the cocoa and a good hint of sweetness too, although this bar isn’t as creamy as Dairy Milk for example. I found the bar to be easy to eat, and the texture made it feel sort of soothing. A lovely bar of chocolate, and it would be lovely to see some more activity from the brand.
Dearest Kraft, please can we have some more Terry’s chocolate products? If you wanted to get onto the nostalgia bandwagon Terry’s Pyramint and Terry’s 1767 would be fantastic!

Terry’s Chocolate Orange [Melt In The Middle] Puddings (Asda)

I may sound a little picky, but one of the things that bothers me with a dessert like this is the packaging. They always come in a plastic pot with a clear sheet sealing the top. I have a slightly irrational dislike of this style packaging for fear that the clear sheet won’t just pull off, and I will end up with plastic in my meal. I have a similar fear of yoghurt pots, so I know I must be in a minority!
Anyway, if you do share my feelings you will be pleased to know that the clear plastic came away neatly, phew, I did not have to resort to a knife! I just wanted to give the makers an extra bonus point in my write up for this! :-)
These puddings can be oven baked or zapped in the microwave for a quick dessert, although I opted for the oven. I thought that the sponge was soft and sweet and that the sauce inside was a lovely touch adding the required moisture. The flavours of rich chocolate and sweet fruity orange mingle well and make for a lovely pudding. I served these exactly as they came, and I really liked it without anything else. However the other two people that tried them with me said they would have liked custard, as they felt the puddings needed something.
I felt that these made a nice tasty dessert, but it might be worthwhile stocking up on some cream or custard to serve them with, just in case.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange – Volcanic Popping Candy (Sainsbury's)

It is lovely to see a new edition to the Terry’s Chocolate Orange range, as it was December 2008 when I last wrote about a new item from them. In fact last year we had the Mint, Hazelnut edition and the White Chocolate Snowball, the latter of which is also back on the shelves and was sitting next to this Popping Candy version.
So this edition looks and smells just like the regular Terry’s Milk Chocolate Orange, except for the fact that the wrapper is a rather nice pink and purple colour. In taste the popping candy doesn’t change the expected sweet orange flavour, but there is an added crunch in the chocolate. After a couple of chews the magic crackling also begins, and the popping candy sets in. It lingers too, making crunching and snapping noises for a few moments after the chocolate is finished. This Chocolate Orange is a novelty, but a rather nice one that would be fun to share with friends.

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Goes Minty (Sainsbury’s)

It wasn’t too long ago I was telling you about Terry’s White Chocolate Orange and Terry’s Chocolate Orange Nut. I wasn’t keen on the nut flavour one (odd, as I am a nuts fan) but I just didn’t think it mixed too well with the orange.
I have to say I did have a short moment of worry when I saw this, because I thought to myself that it might be orange and mint – which would be just wrong. Thankfully though Terry’s didn’t make that mistake!
A simple combination of plain chocolate and fresh mint make for a far more enjoyable treat. The strength of the mint is similar to that of After Eights, and, after much consideration, I have decided I like this far more than a regular Chocolate Orange. It’s so nice!

Terry's Chocolate Orange White (Woolworths)

Well I wasn't impressed by Chocolate Orange Nut, but an addition of white chocolate to the range is very appealing. It is packaged very sweetly, and is labelled as being a Snowball. Christmas is about eight weeks away, and we've had the first snow of the season... So it seems appropriate to talk about this find.
The chocolate is the usual good quality you would expect from Terry's, creamy and with a defined white chocolate flavour. The distinct orange flavour compliments it very well, and makes for a very nice product. I think it should be available all year round really!

Let me just add this to my table of flavour formulas:

White Chocolate + Orange = A good thing

Terry’s Chocolate Orange Nut (Sainsburys)

I associate Terry’s Chocolate Oranges with Christmas, I guess it’s because they make great stocking fillers. I’m sure the availability of chocolate orange nut is a reflection of the fast approaching season.

I’ve learnt something very important from eating this product, I was wrong about nuts... Let me summarise:

Chocolate = a good thing
Nuts = a good thing
Orange = a good thing
Chocolate + Orange = a good thing
Chocolate + Nuts = a good thing
Chocolate + Nuts + Orange = a bad thing

The flavours were all very strong, and they all over powered one another. Perhaps "bad" is the wrong word, but it is certainly a strange flavour combination.
