Minecraft Doritos - Creeper Vinegar and BBQ too. [@NLi10]

I've barely played Minecraft.  I remember all the fuss in the early days when it and other similar voxel games came out - and it wasn't for me.  Fast forward probably 20 years and there's a movie coming.

And the tie-ins are out in force. Here are some simplified Doritos!

If you like the corn triangles, but don't like all the complicated flavours then they have got you covered - it's vinegar - just vinegar.  Salt is evil so we can't have that, and you don't want exciting things - just eat the vinegar.

They taste a bit like the pickled onion monster-munch, but they are clearly vinegar on chips flavour - but the chips are triangles and corn.  Perfect snack for gaming, or in my case sitting and watching the Rumble.  Not exciting enough for adults, but perfect for picky teens.

Doritos Loaded Pepperoni Pizza (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Doritos Loaded Pepperoni Pizza

Here is the second new flavour from Doritos, again in the theme of a take-away. Last time we had Burger King, and this time we have Doritos Loaded Pepperoni Pizza. There is still a voucher on the bag for Burger King, and these ones don't seem to be in conjunction with any pizza take-away. We decided to share these with a jacket potato with chilli con carne on top and some of these as a side. We had a sour cream dip too, which made for a rather lovely meal.

The new Doritos Loaded Pepperoni Pizza are reddish in colour and clearly have a fair bit of seasoning on them. I gave one a try and was impressed by the flavour. I could pick up nice spices and some meat flavours too, which was very much the pepperoni shining through. There is a bit of a cheese taste, but it was mild, and I don’t think I’d have guessed that they were pizza from a blind testing. There was a hint of Italian herbs, but it was all about the pepperoni. As pepperoni-flavored chips,  though, they were really nice. I liked the mildly spiced meat flavour; they were seriously tasty. They were good with the dip too, and I’d happily buy them again.

Doritos Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper (Tesco) By @Cinabar

Doritos Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper

Sometimes brands work together that you wouldn’t really expect to be working together, one combination I didn’t see coming was this. Here we have the exciting combination: Doritos Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper Corn Chips. I love Doritos, so I was keen to give these a try, even though the packet says "burger not included"!

We shared the bag and poured them out. The seasoning makes the chips look a little darker than the usual salted Doritos, but not very much. I gave one a try and was pretty impressed with the flavour. Burger King always tastes barbecued, and these new chips had that distinctive flavour. They had that chargrilled taste that was a little salty, and then the lovely rush of beef. There was depth to the flavour too, I’m not going to say I could pick out all the salad flavours, but I will say they had a hint of freshness to the flavour, which makes sense if you try them! So all in all, these Doritos Burger King Flame Grilled Whopper corn chips sounded like a novelty, but they are well put together and ones I’d go back for, so a total success.

Doritos Stax - Mexican Chilli Salsa (Asda) By @Cinabar

Doritos Stax - Mexican Chilli Salsa

This tube of Doritos Stax - Mexican Chilli Salsa really did stand out on the shelf because of its shape. I say ‘tube’ it isn’t technically a tube as it is triangular but as my Maths GCSE was some years ago I can’t remember the correct geometry term for such a shape. Anyone?
Anyway the tube is bright and made of thick cardboard, and we decided we would have some with a chilli con carne. The Doritos seem thinner than the ones you would get in the bag, which made them oddly sharp. I prefer the thicker version in the bag. The flavour also seemed muted, I have eaten Doritos in the bag where the seasoning has been so thick that you have to lick your fingers, but these were quite plain. The taste was mostly of that corn like taste that Doritos have, and a hint of chilli. No heat really from them, I thought they were a bit dull.
Doritos Stax - Mexican Chilli Salsa is one of the products that the packaging is the best part but the product is far better in its original format. We don’t need Doritos in a tube (or whatever the shape is called) we need them in a thicker format with seasoning that makes your fingers go orange. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

Fried Green Doritos – Doritos Guacamole Flavour (Sainsburys) By @Cinabar

Fried Green Doritos – Doritos Guacamole Flavour

With the exception of vegetables I’m not sure green is a good colour for food. I’d say dusting a food in a green powder is also unappetising, but here we have Fried Green Doritos, or as the bag states; Doritos Guacamole, I think my title is better! ;-)

Spectre hates guacamole, he isn’t a fan of avocado and a dip made from it really was never going to work for him. Still I opened the bag of these Doritos Guacamole and he did give one a try, he didn’t like it but said it was because it tasted of guacamole so at least they are doing something right, even if it didn’t impress him. I had a portion of these to go with a jacket potato and chilli, with a sour cream dip. Did I mention they are green?

The flavour works really well, like a pre-scooped dip on a Dorito. The flavour is cooling but also has a bit of warmth, it is strong on the old avocado but I thought it worked well. It certainly made for a tasty dinner with the chilli con carne. Not sure I could convince a guacamole hater to like these, but at least I managed to get past the colour and enjoy the variety.

Doritos Collisions - Honey Glazed Ribs / Lemon Blast (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Doritos Collisions - Honey Glazed Ribs / Lemon Blast

Did I mention we had a sort out of our Foodstuff Finds crisp cupboard and found interesting things waiting to be tried? Spectre told me to stop buying crisps and that we should investigate what is in the cupboard. I think it is a good idea, but still accidentally ordered more crisps on our online order for this week, it is not my fault if there are new Walkers flavours coming out!
The bag in question today is these Doritos Collisions - Honey Glazed Ribs / Lemon Blast. There are two flavours mixed in the bag and each Doritos chip is one or the other, not both if you see what I mean. You can see a slight difference in the colour, but I quite like to pick them up at random.
The first flavour I had was the darker colour Honey Glazed Ribs, these were spot on. The flavour was a little spicy, a little sweet and had a good tangy taste. They weren’t revolutionary, but they were tasty. The Lemon Blast section were the paler ones in colour but they were very much full flavoured. The lemon was strong acidic and sharp, and very different for a Dorito. I like them, I thought they were something a bit unusual and they kept the bag interesting. I think I would have been happy to have a whole bag of these, as they were so fresh, acidic and different. I think these might be a bit too different for some though as the flavour was so strong they tasted less like Doritos.
I have to admit I’m looking forward to the other interesting bags of crisps we have in our cupboard, besides I need to make some space for all the new varieties I accidentally ordered too….

Doritos Collisions - Habanero and Guacamole (@NLi10)

We don't buy 'chips' all that often, it's more of a sharing thing.  We did pick these up to go with a lunch or two and they were a little bit more interesting than I'd expected.

Doritos Collisions (or Collusions as I'd oddly fixed in my head until writing this) have been around for a good decade now, but this is a new one to me.

It's a fairly standard twist, a hot one and a less hot one (although the dust meant they were both a little spicy).

Are you bold enough to give it a try??!! Well yes - even the spicy ones aren't that spicy.

Obligatory pack shot that makes it look like you don't get many!

I was fairly civilised and had mine with Olive bread with a pastel de nata for afters.  Yum.

And you know - they are fine - they are only Doritos after all.  More interesting than most of the standard flavours though and a nice change for lunch.

NEW: Doritos BBQ Bits (WHSmiths) By @SpectreUK

NEW: Doritos BBQ Bits

We usually try to do a different spooky snack every day during the Halloween period, so you can imagine my despair when Cinabar informed me last night that the innovation for scary foodstuffs hasn't been great in the supermarkets this year. Still the same old same old, asides some funky beers to write about over the next week or so, and a particularly cool cake (Spoiler alert). She did pass me these new Doritos BBQ Bits stating they are "hot off the shelf". They are BBQ flavour corn snacks. I don't think they're scary chilli hot, although they are in a red packet. There is paprika, spices and cayenne pepper in the ingredients, but let's face it, I'm desperately reaching… Freaky evil laugh time? Bwhuh… ha, ha, hah! Never mind…

On opening the packet there was a smoky sweet barbecue smell to the millions (possibly) of tiny orange twisted shaped corn snacks inside. WARNING: Choking hazard!?! At least there's something scary about this blog. I wouldn't eat these Doritos BBQ Bits running down a dark alleyway in the middle of the night whilst being chased by a vampire! On tipping a gob-full of these corn snacks into my mouth there is smokiness to start with in their flavour, followed by a little sticky sweet barbecue sauce, and a small heap of paprika, and then the corn aftertaste dully shines through. These Doritos BBQ Bits are pretty tasty. I'd give them a thumbs up, especially for snacks on a gaming night for tipping in a mouthful between Battle Royale or racing your friends.

Information on the packet;
The 33g packet contains 175 calories, 1.2g of fat, 1.7g of sugar and 0.49g of salt. For ingredients please see photograph.

Doritos Collisions: Honey Glazed Ribs / Lemon Blast (Ocado) By @Cinabar

Doritos Collisions: Honey Glazed Ribs / Lemon Blast

The new flavour from Doritos is actually two flavours in one bag, they have combined Honey Glazed Ribs and Lemon Blast seasonings, and mixed the flavours up in the pack. I could see the two distinct flavours were distinguishable as the Honey Glazed Rib side were slightly darker.
We had a few of these new Doritos with a chilli con carne meal night, and had some sour cream dip too. I started with a Honey Glazed Rib Dorito and absolutely loved it. The flavour was sweet and spicy, with just a touch of chilli heat. They were a very moreish flavour, and the honey added a lovely sweetness. The other side contrasted well as the Lemon Blast were strong, and sharp in flavour. The citrus was full on and I enjoyed the zingy taste, it worked surprisingly well as a Dorito flavour. The combination of the two flavours may well not have sounded like they would go together but they really did, and I enjoy the mix of sweet then sour while eating them.
We loved having these accompanying our meal, but I think they would go down rather well poured into a bowl and shared with friends too, especially if you are looking for an interesting snack to munch on while watching the footie.

New Doritos HeatBurst - Chipotle Cream and Chilli (@DoritosUK) By @Cinabar

The lovely folks from Doritos sent us a bag of their new “Heatburst” Chipotle Cream and Chilli chips. The idea of this new flavour is that it is a two in one type of product, where the seasoning on the outside of the chip is Chipotle Cream flavoured and the chip itself actually contains the chilli which is released when you bite in.
We opened up the bag and shared some out and the chips looked nicely dusted with a decent amount of seasoning.

The aroma was nice and spicy, and very appealing. Given the nature of these new crisps I decided to start off with giving the chip a tentative lick. The had a lovely rich smokey paprika like flavour, not too hot but with some fab warm tones. Next I decided to chew said chip and that is when the Heatburst kicked in. These new Doritos Heatburst certainly have a kick. The heat is hot and the tingle in my mouth lasted a good few minutes after I’d finished munching.
I tried another one and allowed it lull me into a false security, I let it dissolve on my tongue, giving off its gentler smoky flavour, and then I bit in and allowed the heat to hit. Wow, I have to admit to loving the two toned flavours. It is greta fun and works really well.
The issue can be summarised by remembering that you cannot eat a Dorito without chewing, so the heat burst is inevitable! I’ll certainly be getting them again though, the flavours are fab and the chilli heat is wonderfully moreish.

New Doritos A - Sizzling Salsa (Waitrose) [By @Cinabar]

Having tried the very tasty Doritos B - Ultimate Cheeseburger edition, I was very much looking forward to this bag of Doritos A Spicy Salsa. Basically Doritos have brought out two new flavours, labelled them as A and B and let the public make their mind up about which will be their favourite. The public can "destroy" one, to use their terminology. I have already tried the cheeseburger variety and loved them, so these have high competition indeed.
As per the Doritos B, Doritos A Spicy Salsa has limited design on the packaging. Just the basic black and white design, I'm guessing they are not investing on the design until they know which one they are bringing out properly.
The aroma was mild with a hint of tomato, but the flavour was very well detailed. They had a kick of warmth, which was nice but they weren't too hot. What I liked was the detailed representation of the salsa flavour. It tasted fresh and slightly tart and sour, with a good hit of tomato. The flavour was quite detailed and it worked very well, there was even a level of herbs and spices.
These were good. The flavour was very close to representing its intended variety. If I hadn't tried the cheeseburger ones I'd be raving about these. As it is, as you literally have to pick one over the other the Doritos B - Ultimate Cheeseburger wins hands down. It is a more exciting flavour, and the flame grilled beef within it was superb. Get both Doritos while you can, because these Spicy Salas ones are still fab, even though I'm pretty confident the Ultimate Cheeseburger ones will win this.

New Doritos B - Ultimate Cheeseburger (@doritosuk Waitrose) [By @Cinabar]

So Doritos are putting two flavours up against each other in a bid to find a new winner. There are instructions on the bag of how to vote, and a hefty prize up for grabs. They clearly don’t want to invest too much in packaging design until they have their winner, these bags look surprisingly basic.
The new flavours are A - Spicy Salsa and B - Ultimate Cheeseburger. I have both bags, and despite some desire to follow the logical A before B taste testing, the Ultimate Cheeseburger flavour sounded too good not to open first.
I opened up the pack and inhaled the aroma. Initially they smelt a little bit meaty, but nothing wow.

I poured a few onto the plate, sat down and tucked in. They were amazing. They pretty much nailed the flavour on the head. The cheeseburger taste is very meaty, and has the most moreish flame-grilled flavour. There is a lovely hint of cheese, and you can almost picture the burger in the bap. The taste is complex, and all the elements make these very moreish and a pleasure to munch through. The star of the show is that wonderfully beefy taste, just like it came straight off the barbecue. I’m not sure that Doritos could have made a cheeseburger flavour any better than this, and I had no idea it would work so well as a seasoning. I’ll be buying another bag.
I will of course be trying A - Spicy Salsa very soon, and only then will I make a final decision on my favourite. I have to say though, these are going to be seriously difficult to beat.

Doritos Roulette (Waitrose) [By @cinabar] #DoritosRoulette #HotChilli

We watched Eurovision this year with pizza and Doritos, what more could you want for a Saturday night! Obviously being Foodstuff Finds the Doritos were the new variety, Doritos Roulette.
The idea of these Doritos chips is that most are a pleasing cheesey flavour and some are red hot chilli. I've even a lot of "hot" crisps and the one thing that is consistently true is that hot crisps aren't seriously hot. Tangy, spicy, even a little burny but nothing that bad. I poured out some of the Doritos and had a little look to see if I could work out which ones the hot ones were visually. They all looked the same, I couldn't spot which ones I thought would be the chilli ones which meant picking them out really was Roulette. I ate one that looked heavily seasoned and found them to have a tasty nacho cheese flavour, which was seriously good. We had some garlic dip (which came with the pizza) and it was a fab flavour combo. A couple of Doritos later I had what I thought was a hot one, it was warmer than the others but only a bit. I thought it was a bit disappointing. Later I realised that particular chip was just a bit warmer than the others because it had been leaning on an actual hot one. I know this because the next Doritos chip I ate nearly killed me. It wasn't just hot, it was like eating pure liquid fire. It hurt. I got up desperate for water, I went to the fridge and tried to open it but a chilli triggered sneezing fit prevented me. Eventually I slugged some milk back and recovered. Bravely I tried to eat some more, but by my fourth hot crisp I realised they were unbearable and they had beaten me. Spectre happily took the rest of my portion off me, he said he could just about cope with them providing they had a heavy covering of dip, but the sweat on his brow and the pink in his cheeks said otherwise. ;-)
They were fun but dangerous for our Eurovision fuelled feast. Great novelty but Im not sure we buy them again! Congrats to Sweden on winning, fab song but the interactive animation mixed with it had our vote.

Dorritos and Max - Jalapeno Fire Doritos and Citrus Freeze Pepsi Max [By @NLi10]

I while back I received an e-mail that called me up to become a super-hero, and I decided that despite it needing a photo and a bit of effort I'd give it a go. I was expecting an e-mail back with a money off voucher for Pepsi (disclosure - which is my mass produced sugar water of choice) or something similar. I got nothing. Just over a month later a parcel was left for me with the elderly couple next door that I was not expecting (maybe they are my Alfred) and I opened it up in front of them to find it was Jalapeno Fire Dorritos and Citrus Freeze Pepsi Max. As this was not something they would enjoy sharing I took it all next door to my secret lair.

Also in the box was a DVD for the movie Kick Ass (which I haven't seen as it's not on LoveFilm) and a Survival book which is similar to a calendar I had a few years ago that teaches you how to wrestle crocodiles and other useful hints. Naturally this is better than a voucher. I also got a pair of invisibility glasses whose functionality seems to have been impaired during transit.

First up I had a try of the Pepsi Max (or Mepsi, which has become the affectionate truncated name for it but sounds a lot less extreme than i guess it's supposed to be). I have a long history with variations of Pepsi Max, and even had a corduroy jacket with the logo on I got from C&A back when I was young enough that parents had to pay for my clothes, but old enough to be allowed to choose them. As mentioned previously regular Pepsi is a go-to drink for me, and Pepsi Max's borderline mind-altering chemicals have frequently been mixed with the similar KFC chicken prior to music events to enhance the experience.

The citrus freeze variety has an aftertaste of Lime but is still recognisably Pepsi Max. I think it's suffered a bit during transport, and isn't as fizzy as it could be, but still tastes pretty good. I think that the flavour is designed to be pretty smooth and it's not as intense as I expected. I'll certainly try this at some point while out to see whether this is an effect of the postal nature of its arrival.

I'm not a big fan of spicy 'corn chips' - the best Dorrito flavour so far is the lime one, that starts off as a lovely tingle and by the end of a large bag can get quite powerful. These also seem to have something that promotes hyperactivity (as I found out to my cost in a lecture where I had a bag for lunch) but maybe I'm just particularly sensitive to certain additives. I opened the bag of Jalapeno Fire with some trepidation.

The first thing I noticed was the smell - it's like Hot Monster Munch! These are one of the greatest Kidult snacks on the planet (I wonder if they are just known in the UK - anyone know of international variations?) and the pickled onion and Hot flavours are both amazing. Suddenly the experience was less like the chilli-beef that I had at Shanghai 30s and more like a childhood snack and a lot less scary. So I took a bite.

Surprisingly they aren't all that similar in flavour to Monster Munch. They don't have the initial savoury (umami?) kick of the MM, but do have a nice slight chilli flavour. The heat curve builds from this up to about 20 seconds in and is very bearable, and then gently reduces afterwards. This is far less potent than I expected, but much more pleasurable for it. Also the chips seem more fragile and less like cinema nachos than I remember, which is also good as this probably means they have reduced the calorie content of the recipe. I'm surprised, but I actually like these! Naturally I’d struggle to eat these while gaming - I'd hate to get burning dust over controllers and cards, but I may take these out tonight to the theatre (the comedian Milton Jones).

Importantly for this promo though, how do the two work in tandem? Actually quite well is the shock answer! The slightly less fizzy Mepsi counteracts the burn of the Dorritos well and encourages chugging of the slightly larger than normal 600ml drink.

The main question we like to answer here is would I buy them again - and over their regular counterparts? I'd happily pick up a bag of Lime Dorritos for a party with a couple of bottles of regular Pepsi Max, but I think for a change it might be nice to get the new version. It may surprise a few elderly relatives with the spiciness and hidden Lime kick though, so this is more of a 'with friends' kind of option. I can see these being a massive hit with teenagers though, and the @_icefist and @_FireFingers twitter accounts contents suggest that this may be the target audience.

As for me - I'm 32 and sitting here in my Invisibility Glasses, and if I make it through all of the crisps & pop I may just believe that they work...

Doritos Sizzlin’ Fajita (Waitrose)

It sort of seems appropriate that one of the new flavours of Doritos is Fajita, as both the corn snack and the food substance are two things I regularly enjoy in Mexican restaurants like Chiquitos. For those that don’t know Doritos are a triangular corn based snack, seasoned with a variety of flavours. I always eat them straight out the pack, but with a sour cream dip. The bag suggests warming them up with an array of salsa, sour cream and melting cheese which sounds more than nice too.
The Fajita taste is surprisingly tasty, and manages to get through a complicated but meaty and spicy element. There is a definite hit of spice, paprika, tomato and garlic, with an aftertaste of something meaty like chicken and then cheese. I know it sounds like there are too many ingredients, but it just kind of works, and is really nice. Trouble is with Doritos is that the crunchy corn base is rather a strong flavour, and does over power some of the seasoning. These have a good taste, and nice spice that hits afterwards, but I do wonder what the seasoning would taste like on a regular crisp, strong but darn fine I imagine!

Doritos Red Pepper & Pepperoni Dip (Sainsbury’s)

No Nacho’s are complete without a decent helping of dip, and I usually pick up a jar of Doritos Salsa as a good condiment for them. Doritos have now bought out this new salsa style product, made with red pepper and pepperoni and I picked up this jar for a change, and also because it was labelled as ‘new’! ;-)
I like salsa, I do, I buy it often. This little jar of dip though was amazing, it seem to correct all the faults I hadn’t noticed that the regular salsa had. The sharp acidic taste is gone, and the tomato is softer and the red pepper adds a lovely vegetable flavour. There is a spicier taste, and each spice is easier to spot because the sharp onion isn’t there to overpower it. Finally the pepperoni adds a wonderful meatiness that I would never have though to add, but works really well. I really loved this stuff, and despite buying many jars of Salsa in the past, I consider myself converted! Yum!

Doritos Collisions Chicken Sizzler and Zesty Salsa (Sainsbury’s)

A product for the indecisive! If you spend time trying to choose between Chicken or Salsa flavour corn chips, why not buy a bag with both. This is not two separate bags stuck together, but one bag with both flavours mixed up.

It’s a curious idea, but I can confirm that both varieties are really nice. They both have a distinctive flavour, the Chicken Sizzlers do have a meaty barbecue seasoning and the Zesty Salsa has a tangy tomato edge. Both are very nice!

If you don’t like surprises and you look closely at the Doritos you can tell the flavours apart by their colour!
