This Rhubarb & Custard Sour ale is definitely not vanilla ice cream. I may have mentioned before that I do like rhubarb as a flavour very much, and I do like custard, but not both of them at the same time in the same bowl. I'm not a ice cream and jelly type of person either, unless they're also served in different bowls! I did try a Rhubarb & Custard cider a while back and really didn't like it. It was the custard creaminess that ruined the flavour for me if I recollect correctly.
This Tiny Rebel Rhubarb & Custard Sour ale was brewed with milk, vanilla and fruit purée, presumably from rhubarb. At 4% in volume this sour ale is a misty rose golden colour, with a sour candy smell of rhubarb followed by a creamy vanilla aroma. On taste this really is a sour pudding beer. Face twistingly sour in fact... Pouring with an excitable head, this Rhubarb & Custard Sour ale immediately attacked the sour zones in my palate. I like sour sweets, but this ale is... whoosh! Wow, there is initially biting and snapping rhubarb sourness and then the bitter hops pile in. The sweet malts are hiding away somewhere and barely show up in the tasting. There is a hint of vanilla at the end of the flavour, but that was fleeting. This Tiny Rebel Rhubarb & Custard Sour ale is not for me, I'm afraid...
